    • A recording apparatus is capable of recording an image on a recording medium and of erasing an image recorded on the recording medium. The apparatus has a recording device such as a print hammer and a drive motor therefor; an erasure tape for erasing the image recorded on the recording medium by the recording device; a shift mechanism for shifting the erasure tape upwardly or downwardly; a circuit for causing the erasure tape to execute a plurality of image erasing operations; a recognition device for recognizing an erasure condition such as the kind of erasure ribbon, the kind of character and the size of a character; and a control circuit for controlling the shift mechanism so that the amount of shift of the erasure tape varies in accordance with the erasure conditions recognized by the recognition device. It is accordingly possible to improve the image erasure function of the apparatus.

    • A compact, lightweight printer capable of using multi-track ink ribbons that facilitates multicolor printing, without having a dedicated track switching drive system. The printer employs a printing track setting member that is activated by contact pressure from a print head carriage when it moves in one direction and vertically displaces a ribbon frame supporting the ribbon to one of several preselected heights with respect to the print head. The setting member is preferably made in the form of a setting lever with a drive end for interacting with the print head carriage and a setting end with a series of setting height stops that interact with the ribbon frame. Rotation of the setting lever places different setting level stops under the frame which varies its height accordingly. A printing track release member is also provided which is activated by contact pressure from the print head carriage when it moves in an opposite direction and raises the ribbon frame to disengage the track setting member and move the ribbon support frame to a new height. The track release member is preferably formed as a rotatable release shaft with drive end for interacting with the print head carriage and a release end with a lever extending under and toward the ribbon cassette. Rotation of the track release member shaft causes the lever to raise the ribbon frame accordingly.

    • A mechanism is disclosed for converting monochrome dot matrix printers to color printers by means of a ribbon shift mechanism on ribbon cartridges, the action of which is controlled by print head motion. The mechanism comprises a ribbon guide, which redirects the ribbon vertically across the print head. This guide is attached to the ribbon cartridge via a slide, which allows the ribbon to slide horizontally, across its width, effecting a shift relative to the head. Friction pads on the guide contact the print media, holding the guide still relative to the media until head motion exceeds the slide limit. Then the pads are moved to a new position on the media. The print head can thus move across the color bands of a multicolor ribbon, providing a color selection mechanism. A printer driver can control this to effect color printing.Using this device, a monochrome dot matrix printer can be converted to color printing capability by simply replacing the ribbon cartridge and installing a supporting printer drive.The invented device can also be used to spread strike wear over the width of the print ribbon, extending, and potentially doubling, ribbon life.
