    • A percussion apparatus and method of using the percussion apparatus. The apparatus may be used for delivering an impact to a tubular string. The apparatus comprises a cylindrical member having an internal bore containing an anvil and a first guide profile. The apparatus further includes a rotor disposed within the internal bore, and wherein the rotor member comprises a body having an outer circumference with a second guide profile thereon, and wherein the rotor contains a radial hammer face. In a first position, the second external guide profile of the rotor will engage with the first guide profile of the cylindrical member so that the radial hammer face can contact the anvil. In a second position, the second guide profile of the rotor will engage with the first guide profile of the cylindrical member so that the radial hammer face is separated from the anvil shoulder. Multiple rotors and multiple stators may be employed. The rotor may be operatively associated with a stator that directs flow into the rotor. The rotor may be comprised of a plurality of inclined blades. The percussion apparatus may be incorporated into a tubular string and used for multiple purposes within a well bore. For instance, a method of cementing a well with the percussion apparatus is disclosed.

    • An impact mechanism, such as an impact wrench is provided and includes a motor, a shaft rotatable about an axis and coupled to the motor and having a first shaft groove with first and second axial ends and a hammer disposed about the shaft and having a first hammer groove. A ball is disposed in the first hammer groove and in the first shaft groove and couples the hammer to the shaft for relative axial and rotatable movement, with the ball moveable along the grooves. The wrench also includes a rotatable anvil for coupling to a load, a bias member resiliently biasing the hammer axially into engagement with the anvil and stop structure disposed along the shaft for engagement with the hammer to limit axial movement of the hammer away from the anvil so as to prevent the ball from contacting the second axial end of the first shaft groove.

    • A reversible rotary wrench includes an impact mechanism for applying intermittent torque impulses to a load. The mechanism includes a rotatable shaft having an axis and adapted to be coupled to a motive source, a rotatable anvil for coupling to the load and having a pair of anvil ears, a tubular hammer substantially coaxial with the shaft and having a pair of hammer ears engageable with the anvil ears and a rotatable tubular drive coupling member substantially coaxial with the shaft. The mechanism also includes a first helical cam structure coupling the drive coupling member to the shaft, a second helical cam structure coupling the drive coupling member to the hammer, and a spring biasing the hammer axially toward the anvil to engage the hammer ears with the anvil ears. When the shaft is rotated in a first helical direction and torque exerted by the anvil on the hammer exceeds a given threshold, the sleeve rotates and the first cam structure responds to rotation of the shaft to move the hammer axially away from the anvil thereby disengaging the hammer from the anvil. When the shaft is rotated in a second direction and torque exerted by the anvil on the hammer exceeds a given threshold, the second cam structure responds to rotation of the shaft to move the hammer axially away from the anvil thereby disengaging the hammer from the anvil.

An adjustable bypass valve (50; 150) is arranged to limit the peak pressure in the fluid chamber (19; 119) as well as the torque impulse magnitude delivered by the tool.

    • This invention relates to an impact wrench clutch mechanism having a single roller element extending longitudinally between a motor driven coupling and an anvil. A hammer enclosing the roller member, has a single longitudinal pocket, engaged by the roller element for transmission of rotary movement to the hammer. The anvil has cam means arranged to activate the roller element whereby anvil rotation is accomplished with or without impacting, depending upon work load resistance applied to the anvil.
