    • A power tool with a housing, a motor, a transmission, a spindle and an impact mechanism. The motor has an output shaft that drives the transmission. The transmission has a plurality of planet gears, a planet carrier journally supporting the planet gears for rotation about an axis, and a ring gear that is in meshing engagement with the planet gears. The impact mechanism has a plurality of anvil lugs, an impactor and an impactor spring. The anvil lugs are coupled to the ring gear and are not engaged by the planet gears. The impactor is mounted to pivot about the spindle and has a plurality of hammer lugs. The impactor spring biases the impactor toward the ring gear to cause the hammer lugs to engage the anvil lugs. A power tool having an impact mechanism with an external adjusting member that can be moved to vary a trip torque of the impact mechanism is also provided.

    • An improved rotary impact clutch or impact wrench of the type normally used for setting threaded fasteners by imparting rotary impacts. The combination includes a hammer member which is driven; an anvil to which the rotary impacts are delivered. Pins which may be referred to as dog pins or anvil pins are carried in axial recesses on the inside of the hammer member and are movable axially against the force of a spring to come into position to deliver impacts against lobes of the anvil member. Ball cam means are provided associated with a cam sleeve which has engagement with the dog pins for the imparting of the axial movement to them. The dog pins or anvil pins are generally cylindrical, having an intermediate part of smaller diameter. The improvements reside primarily in a further component preferably in the form of a ring, shaped to be positioned inside of the hammer and having diametrically opposed recesses to engage the end parts of the dog or anvil pins. The combination with this part achieves the purpose that the anvil pins are held accurately in position while moving angularly with the hammer member and axially relative to it into a position to impact the anvil.

    • The manually-actuated, rotary-impact tool for rotatively driving a fastener has a spring in a handle for storage of energy, a rotatable tool head and an inertia member surrounding the tool head and connected to the handle via driving connections. A cam associated with the handle is provided to coact with the driving connections to disengage the driving connections when the tool head rotation is resisted by a predetermined force and the handle is rotated relative to the tool head and to allow re-engagement of the driving connections in another operative condition. A lever arm is pivotally connected to the handle so as to coact with the handle and inertia member to actuate the spring for storage of energy upon resistance of the tool head to rotation and to rotate the inertia member under the force of the stored energy of the spring and effect conversion of the kinetic energy of the inertia member to impact force on the tool head upon re-engagement of the driving connections. The pivotal connection of the lever arm is offset from the longitudinal axis of the handle.

    • This invention pertains to a rotary impact tool and a clutch therefor, wherein a motor drives a carrier cage or member within which is pivotally mounted one or more swinging hollow hammer members. An output shaft extends through the carrier member and through the hollow hammer member and includes forward and reverse impact anvil surfaces. The hammer member is, or members are, mounted to swing in respect to the carrier member as the hammer member(s) rotate(s) with the carrier member, and carries forward and reverse impact jaws on its internal surface. As the clutch is driven in the forward direction by an air motor or the like, the forward impact jaw is moved in and out of the path of the anvil jaw on the output shaft by cam action, and during an impact blow the inertia of the rotating hammer member(s) act automatically to hold the impact jaw in engagement with the anvil jaw.

    • An impact force producing apparatus that is described in connection with one particularly suitable use on a backhoe vehicle although it is usable on other vehicles and apparatus. A frame is provided which can be attached directly to the backhoe. A heavy ram is flexibly mounted to the frame in such a manner that it may freely oscillate relative to the frame. Attached to the ram is a hydraulic motor coupled with an eccentric weight to provoke vibrational movement in the ram. The relative inertias and locations of the components, the resilient mountings and the driving force of the eccentric weight are interrelated to create a vibratory motion in the ram which provides a unidirectional impact on a tool positioned on the frame and drives the ram near a resonance of the system. Guides may be provided to eliminate secondary harmonics and extraneous vibrations and movements.

    • The machine incorporates an air-operated striking piston whose body contains an air-distribution arrangement and a hammer reciprocating due to the action of compressed air so as to deliver at the end of a work stroke a blow at a drill steel arranged in the front part of the machine. Accommodated in the front part of the machine is a rotary impulse fronthead whose body contains an annular striking piston with projections and a rotary anvil with co-operative indentations and projections so arranged that their side surfaces and walls of the fronthead body form work stroke and idle stroke chambers which connect to a source of compressed air or atmosphere at regular intervals. The projections of the annular striking piston oscillate in these chambers back and forth and through an angle at a high rate due to the action of compressed air so as to deliver at the end of a work stroke a blow at the cooperative projections of the rotary anvil, causing to rotate the rotary anvil linked with the drill steel. Arranged in the front part of the fronthead body is a ratchet mechanism which assures that the rotary anvil and the drill steel rotate in only one direction.
