    • A method of controlling a surgical cutting device, the device including a hollow needle with a port for tissue entry and a moveable cutting blade for severing tissue entering the needle through said port, the blade being movable between a first portion enabling tissue entry through said port and a second portion closing said port, the tissue entering the needle being severed as the blade moves between the first and second portions, the method includes the steps: a) providing vacuum to said hollow needle to cause tissue entry into the needle through said port; b) moving the blade from the first portion to the second position to sever the tissue entering the needle; c) evacuating severed tissue from the needle by vacuum; d) reducing vacuum to the needle before moving the blade from the second position to the first position; and repeating steps (a) through (d).

    • A biopsy device which is compatible for use with a magnetic resonance imaging machine. The device includes a non-metallic elongated substantially tubular needle having a distal end for insertion within tissue, a proximal end, and a longitudinal axis therebetween. The needle comprising right and left members on either side of the longitudinal axis, wherein the right and left members each having upper and lower ends comprising a series of alternating male and portions. The male portions of the right member mate with the female portion of the left member, and the male portions of the left member mate with the female portions of the right member to securely attach the two members together.     • An intra-vaginal self-administered cell collecting device and method includes inserting a tampon-like telescoping tube intra-vaginally. The tube includes an expandable preformed absorbent member having a textured cover. The absorbent member also includes a retrieval member extending therefrom. The tube is manipulated to expel the absorbent member intra-vaginally. The tube is removed and the absorbent member is retained intra-vaginally for a period of time. The absorbent member is retained from expanding from its preform when exposed to vaginal fluids by means of a cover on the absorbent material. The cover also captures soughed-off cells in the vaginal fluids. The absorbent material is retrieved manually by the retrieval member.

    • A method and device to predict ovulation in a female human by measuring changes in the concentration of a number of ions in eccrine sweat is disclosed. The concentration, or changes in concentration, of one or more ions are determined throughout the day and analyzed against predetermined patterns in order to predict ovulation one to five days in advance. This permits the user to more accurately determine commencement of the fertile phase, which for female humans is generally considered to be about four days prior to ovulation to one day after ovulation. The concentration of the ions measured include sodium (Nanull), potassium (Knull), ammonium (NH4null), calcium (Ca2null), chloride (Clnull) and nitrate (NO3null) To further increase the accuracy of the reading, a large number of readings can be obtained throughout a day and statistically analyzed to determine the change over time. In addition, the concentration of two or more ions can be obtained to increase accuracy. Ratiometric measurements between two or more ions can be determined to increase accuracy and account for ion accumulation on the skin. Ratiometric measurements between ammonium (NH4null) and calcium (Ca2null) have been found to provide more distinct patterns because the concentrations of these two ions change in opposite directions during the relevant period preceding ovulation.
