    • In an embodiment, a user equipment (UE), establishes a local connection (e.g., USB, Bluetooth, etc.) to a network infrastructure device (e.g., a network switch or router) that is not yet configured for operation on a communications network. The UE obtains, while connected to the network infrastructure device over the local connection, device-identifying information (e.g., a location of the UE, a pre-provisioned identifier for the network infrastructure device, etc.) by which the network infrastructure device can be distinguished from other network infrastructure devices of the same type. The UE loads a configuration installation file that is specially configured for the network infrastructure device based on the obtained device-identifying information. The UE executes the configuration installation file over the local connection to configure the network infrastructure device for operation on the communications network.

    • Embodiments of the present invention include network cables that include a number of inter-integrated circuit communication addressable components in the connector heads. The inter-integrated circuit communication addressable components include signal translators and switches for communicating with environmental and electrical sensors, memories, and controllers in the connector heads and the computers or network interface cards to which they are coupled. Such embodiments allow for localized monitoring of environmental and operational data as well as location or server computer specific control of networked-server operations. Such information and control is useful in reducing the cost and increasing the efficiency of server farm installation cooling, maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting. Other embodiments include methods for communicating between a switch and a server computer using the network cable assembly by translating a signal from a one communication protocol to another for transmission over a dedicated connection between two connector heads.

    • A network component management system includes a first network element and a second network element. The second network element is at a customer location and is configured to communicate with the first network element over a communication network. A computing device is configured to communicate with the first and second network elements over the communication network and includes a visibility tool configured to actively monitor the second network element and present a status of the second network element. The status of the second network element indicates whether the second network element is provisioned and able to communicate over the communication network. A method includes querying the network element, determining the status of the network element, presenting the status, and initiating a troubleshooting procedure if the network element is not provisioned or is unable to communicate over the communication network.
