    • A spread spectrum mobile station comprises at least one antenna configured to receive power commands. The power commands indicate that the mobile station should increase or decrease its transmit power. A decision device is configured to process the received power commands and produce a decision indicating whether each received power command indicates an increase or a decrease in the mobile station's transmit power level. An accumulator is configured to accumulate a plurality of the decisions. An algorithm device is configured to receive the accumulated decisions and apply an algorithm to the accumulated decisions to set the mobile station's transmit power level. The algorithm compares a plurality of the decisions to determine if the plurality of decisions match and the transmission power level is adjusted by a first amount if the decisions are determined to match and not adjusted by that first amount if the decisions are determined to not match.

    • The power consumption of a receiving apparatus is reduced. A first equalization unit receives the input of digital signals and then performs equalization processing on them so as to output first equalizer output signals. A modulation scheme determining unit extracts information on a modulation scheme in use, from the signal demodulated by the PSK demodulation unit so as to decide on the modulation scheme. Based on the modulation scheme determined, a decision unit specifies the selection of signals at the first selector and the second selector.

    • An efficient, multichannel filter for CDMA modems permits multiple serial, digital bit streams to be filtered by digital signal processing techniques including sample weighting and summing functions. Each individual channel may have custom weighting coefficients or weighting coefficients common for all channels. If the weighting coefficients are by adaption, the same approach may be taken. The multichannel FIR filter is implemented with no multipliers and a reduction in the number of adders. To increase the speed of operation, the filter structure utilizes look-up tables storing the weighting coefficients. The invention can be embodied as either as a field programmable gate array or an application specific integrated circuit. The use of look-up tables saves significant chip resources.

    • The present invention is directed to an efficient method and apparatus for channel determination and interference vector construction in accordance with spread spectrum systems. Channel determination is performed using a first series of fast Walsh transform steps. The results of the first set of fast Walsh transform steps corresponding to valid communication system channels are compared to a threshold value. Results derived from the first set of fast Walsh transform steps are then passed through a second set of fast Walsh transform steps with the number of steps performed for a set of results determined by the symbol length associated with the channels from which the amplitude information was derived. The interference vectors thus obtained for each valid symbol length may then be combined to form a composite interference vector. The fast Walsh transform steps and other steps may be performed using shared hardware components or software modules.
