    • A disk drive unit for a disk includes a mounting plate, a spindle motor assembly, a slide mechanism provided with a slide, a pickup unit mounted on the slide, a first transmission member operatively connected with the slide, and a second transmission member. The first transmission member is positioned such that it is in engagement with the second transmission member when the pickup unit is in its read and/or write position, and such that the first transmission member is out of engagement with the second transmission member when the pickup unit is in its home position. In order to bring the first and second transmission members into engagement, the transmission members are provided with engagement members. As a result, a limit switch assembly is no longer necessary.

    • An apparatus which provides improved positional control for an access element moveable adjacent a rotatable surface, such as a data transducing head adjacent a data recording disc in a data storage device. The apparatus comprises a fluidic stripper with one or more cantilevered arms which project proximate a corresponding array of one or more rotatable surfaces. Each arm comprises an edge surface which extends proximate to and in facing relationship with a movement path of an access element across the associated rotatable surface to impede fluidic currents established by rotation of the rotatable surface. Each arm further supports a ramp structure which receivingly supports the access element at a position away from the rotatable surface and proximate the innermost diameter during a deactivated mode when the rotatable surface is stationary.

    • A method and system of switching heads in a hard disk drive written using an off-line STW method. In the method, first, deviations between a reference head and each of the heads are calculated. Next, a mapping table having the deviations between the reference head and each of the heads is generated and stored in a memory. Thereafter, when a head switching operation is requested, a current head is switched to a new head to access a track whose number is the same as the track assessed by the current head. A deviation of a track on which the head is positioned, recorded in the mapping table, is applied to the virtual track address of the track on which the head is positioned, thereby obtaining the physical track address of the track on which the head is positioned. The requested track is then accessed based on the obtained physical track address. As described above, in the head switching method, even when disks for a hard disk drive are written using an off-line STW method, the individual disks can be accessed based on an identical virtual track address. Thus, the performance of the hard disk drive is not degraded.
