    • A method for use in medical imaging of a patient including, with the patient immobilized with respect to an imaging reference frame, acquiring first digital imaging information including a first region of interest using a first imaging modality; processing the first digital imaging information to identify a feature for analysis; and using a second imaging modality to acquire targeted second imaging information for a second region of interest, the second region of interest corresponding to a subset of the first region of interest, wherein the second region of interest includes the feature for analysis. An apparatus for use in medical imaging comprising structure for immobilizing a patient with respect to an imaging reference frame; a first imaging system for acquiring first digital imaging information including a first region of interest using a first imaging modality; a processor processing the first digital imaging information using a diagnostic tool to identify a feature of interest; and a second imaging system for acquiring second imaging information using a second imaging modality, the second imaging information corresponding to a second region of interest including the feature for analysis.

    • An automatic contextual segmentation method which can be used to identify features in QCT images of femora, tibiae and vertebrae. The principal advantages of this automatic approach over traditional techniques such as histomorphometry are, 1) the algorithms can be implemented in a fast, uniform, non-subjective manner across many images allowing unbiased comparisons of therapeutic efficacy, 2) much larger volumes in the region of interest can be analyzed, and 3) QCT can be used longitudinally. Two automatic contextual segmentation algorithms relate to a cortical bone algorithm (CBA) and a whole bone algorithm (WBA). These methods include a preprocessing step, a threshold selection step, a segmentation step satisfying logical constraints, a pixel wise label image updating step, and a feature extraction step; with the WBA including whole bone segmentation, cortical segmentation, spine segmentation, and centrum segmentation. The algorithms are constructed to provide successful segmentations for known classes of bones with known topological constraints.

    • A method and apparatus for automatically locating a desired region of interest (ROI) in an original digital image having a plurality of pixel intensity values, comprising:(a) obtaining digital image intensity data representative of an original digital image;(b) sampling the digital image intensity data of the original digital image so as to define a reduced digital image representative of the original digital image;(c) forming an image intensity histogram using the reduced digital image;(d) determining a threshold image intensity value from the histogram as being representative of a minimum image intensity value of a desired ROI;(e) creating a mask image from the reduced digital image, the mask image having image pixels at grid coordinate positions corresponding to similarly positioned pixels in the original digital image, by setting all image pixels in a mask image grid to one of at least a maximum and a minimum intensity value, depending upon a comparison of the threshold intensity value to the image intensity value of a correspondingly positioned pixel in the original digital image; and(f) processing the mask image so as to define at least one contiguous area of pixels in the mask image having a common intensity value, the at least one area comprising the desired ROI.
