    • A method and an apparatus for splitting media files are provided. The method and apparatus enable a mobile device to automatically segment a media file into split files. The mobile device may download a large media file whose size exceeds the file size limit imposed by the file system. The method includes detecting a download event for a specified file, comparing the size of an event related file corresponding to the specified file for which a download event occurs with a file size limit imposed by a file system of a mobile device, identifying, when the size of the event related file is greater than or equal to the file size limit, a type of the event related file, splitting, when the event related file is a media file, the event related file on the basis of the file size limit, and storing the split files according to setting information.

    • A method and system of managing data in a storage device is provided. The method includes receiving a request to store content in a storage device. If the content is discardable content, the content is divided into a plurality of discardable data objects, each associated with at least one type of discarding priority data. The discardable data objects in the storage device are managed based on the discarding priority data associated with each discardable data object. Management of discardable objects may include selection and deletion of discardable objects based on discarding priority data, as well as further subdivision of existing discardable objects, to maintain a desired amount of free space on the storage device. The system may include a host having a processor and a storage device interface configured to execute the method, or a storage device having a processor configured to execute the disclosed methods.

    • Files stored, or to be stored, in a storage device are marked either as non-discardable or as discardable in a file system structure associated with a storage device. Each discardable file has associated with it a discarding priority level. A publisher file is permitted to be stored in the storage device only if storing the publisher file does not narrow a storage usage safety margin that is reserved for user files. User files are allowed to be stored in the storage device even if storing them narrows the storage usage safety margin but, in such cases, the storage usage safety margin is restored by removing one or more discardable files from the storage device. A discardable file is removed from the storage device if its discarding priority level equals or is higher than a predetermined discarding threshold value.

    • Automated systems and processes for managing paper and/or digital files, particularly medical records contained in digital files, digital or paper file folders and the like, in a file storage system having a finite size or expansion capacity. For paper files, a system tracks the thickness of individual file folders, the capacity of storage shelf sections, and the percentage of free space remaining in each shelf section. When occupied shelf space exceeds a threshold percentage for a shelf section, file folders are purged according to the likelihood that certain files will not be requested in the future, by applying purging algorithms to the files. For digital files, when a cumulative amount of storage space consumed by digital files reaches a certain threshold, typically less than the capacity, digital files are purged from the storage allocation according to an algorithm assessing a likelihood that certain files will not be requested in the future.
