    • The pointing device has a moveable puck that moves over a surface in a puck field of motion. A position detector measures the puck position in the puck field of motion. In one embodiment, the puck includes a user sensor that detects an interaction between a user and the puck. A controller causes a cursor to move on a display in response to the puck moving in the puck field of motion when the user sensor senses the interaction between the user and the puck. The magnitude and direction of motion of the cursor is determined by the magnitude and direction of motion of the puck in the puck field of motion. In another embodiment, a restoring mechanism is provided that returns the puck to a predetermined area in the puck field of motion when the user releases the puck.

    • The present invention includes a pointing device having a first surface on which a puck field of motion is defined, a moveable puck, and a position detector. The moveable puck is confined to move on the first surface within the puck field of motion. The position detector determines a position of the puck in the puck field of motion and an angle of rotation of the puck about an axis perpendicular to the first surface. In one embodiment, the puck includes a puck electrode on a second surface on the puck that is parallel to the first surface. The first surface includes first, second, and third electrodes that are parallel to the puck electrode, the puck electrode overlying a portion of each of the first, second, and third electrodes.

    • A joystick controller has a lever mounted for pivotal movement relative to a housing, a seat member affixed to the housing, and a slider member biased towards the seat member. The seat member has a profiled surface that cooperates with a corresponding surface of the slider member. In one aspect, the profiled surface includes at least one lock position for engaging the slider member at a predetermined angle of pivotal displacement of the lever about a first axis. The slider member is shaped to allow pivotal movement of the lever about a second axis, without movement of the slider member, but to prevent movement of the lever about the first axis when engaged in the lock position. In another aspect, the profiled surface has a profile in a first direction whereby the biasing force remains substantially constant when the lever is pivotally displaced about a first axis, and a profile in a second direction whereby displacement of the lever about a second axis displaces the slider member so as to alter the biasing force.

    • A controller for controlling a computer display cursor includes an arena having a predefined optical grid. A puck handle is configured to move a puck on the optical grid and to reflect optical signals to the grid regarding the position of the puck on optical grid. The optical grid defines the resolution of the puck movements and positions that can be ascertained. Gratings formed by undulations in transparent walls provide an optical puck position signal in response to the puck position. A processor is coupled to the optical grid and is configured to receive the puck position signal and to generate a cursor position signal. To generate the cursor position signal, the processor may perform a conversion function based on predetermined criteria. The processor transmits the cursor position signal to a computer having a predefined display size, which displays the cursor at a respective position. Moreover, the processor may maintain puck movement parameters including puck velocity to generate a continuous movement signal when the puck is moved into an edge position. The processor may also identify if the puck is positioned in a number of macro locations that are associated with user-selectable tasks.
