    • A member is formed with first and second cam protrusions. First and second movable plungers define a common pumping chamber, the volume of which varies in accordance with the position of each of the plungers. The plungers alternately engage the cam protrusions and are reciprocated thereby in synchronism with rotation of an engine crankshaft. Fuel is supplied to the pumping chamber as the pumping chamber expands. The fuel is directed out of the pumping chamber toward an engine combustion chamber to effect a fuel injection stroke as the pumping chamber contracts. The timing of engagement of one of the plungers with one of the cam protrusions and the timing of engagement of the other plunger with the other cam protrusion are offset by a preset angular interval with respect to rotation of the crankshaft, the interval being chosen so that the rate of fuel injection during an initial stage of the fuel injection stroke is relatively small.

    • A fuel pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to a compression ignition engine includes a low pressure pump having an outlet connected to an air/fuel separation chamber. The chamber is connected to a high pressure pump through a passage. Fuel is supplied to an inlet of the low pressure pump through a first passage formed in a rotary part of the apparatus, the passage extending into a cavity in the apparatus. A fuel supply passage connects with the cavity and a second passage connects the upper part of the cavity with the fuel inlet of the low pressure pump. The second passage incorporates a non-return valve. Air in the cavity is directed by vortex action to the first passage and can be drawn into the low pressure pump and expelled from the separation chamber through a restricted outlet. If too much air collects in the cavity air will be supplied to the high pressure pump and will cause irregular operation of the engine. The fuel in the cavity when the apparatus is halted covers the entrance of the first passage to allow a restricted flow of fuel to the engine to assist priming of the apparatus.

    • A fuel injection system for a diesel engine having injection and metering modes of operation for delivering fuel to an engine comprising a plurality of fuel injectors wherein each of said fuel injectors comprise a first port, a second port and a metering chamber for storing a premetered quantity of fuel, during the metering mode of operation, prior to the injection of said premetered quantity of fuel into the engine during the injection mode of operation. The system further includes manifold means for connecting in fluid communication each of second ports of each of said fuel injector, pressure regulating means connected between said manifold means and a fuel reservoir for regulating and for supplying fuel at said second determinable pressure to said second inlet port of each of the injectors and distributor pump means connected to the said first port of each of said fuel injectors and to the fuel reservoir for sequentially pressurizing the first port of a particular injector at a pressure greater than the pressure established by the pressure regulating means causing the piston to stabilize at the bottom of its stroke and sequentially thereafter lowering said first pressure level to a pressure lower than that of the pressure established by said pressure regulating means thereby causing said piston to move causing said premetered quantity of fuel to enter said metering chamber of a particular one of said injectors through said second port and for sequentially thereafter increasing said first pressure level thereby causing said piston to pressurize the fuel within said metering chamber to initiate fuel injection into the engine through a nozzle.

    • A liquid fuel injection pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine comprises an injection pump to which fuel is supplied by a fuel pump. An air/fuel separator is provided and also a valve including a spring loaded piston for controlling the output pressure of the feed pump, the separator being connected to the outlet of the feed pump and the piston being subject to the output pressure of the pump. A space is defined in the pump housing and from which fuel can be drawn by the feed pump when the output pressure of the feed pump falls due to the entry of air into the feed pump. The air/fuel separator has a restricted outlet through which air and fuel can flow to an outlet in the housing and the space has an outlet which is placed in communication with the feed pump inlet by the piston.

    • A fuel injection pumping apparatus includes a pair of plungers which are reciprocable within a bore formed in a rotary distributor member. The apparatus is required to provide fuel for a five cylinder engine and surrounding the distributor member is a cam ring which has five equiangularly spaced inwardly extending cam lobes. One of the plungers is engaged by a shoe which mounts a roller for engagement with the cam lobes in turn whilst the other plunger is engaged by a member which mounts a pair of rollers which are spaced by an amount such that they will engage at the same time, an adjacent pair of cam lobes. In this manner both plungers are moved inwardly at the same time five times at each revolution of the distributor member.
