摘要： A sensor configuration for use in detecting ink droplets ejected from an ink drop generator is provided. The sensor configuration includes a sensing element configured to receive a biasing voltage which creates an electric field from the sensing element to the ink drop generator. The sensor configuration also includes a sensing amplifier coupled to the sensing element, whereby the sensing element in imparted with an electrical stimulus when at least one ink droplet is ejected in the presence of the electric field, and thereafter passes in close proximity to the sensing element without substantially contacting the sensing element. Sensor configurations with a separate electrically biasing element which may or may not contact the ink droplets are also provided. Additionally, a printing mechanism having such sensor configurations and a method of making ink drop detection measurements are also provided.

摘要： A drive waveform-determining device is configured and arranged to determine an exact drive waveform for a droplet discharge device with minimal trials. The drive waveform-determining device uses an analysis unit that stores optimal weight and velocity for droplets, and basic configurations of drive waveforms. A weight- and viscosity-determining unit measures the weight of droplets discharged from a discharge head. The analysis unit measures the velocity of the droplets with the aid of a CCD camera and a strobe light. The analysis unit reads a basic configuration of a drive waveform and adjusts the drive waveform so that the measured weight and velocity match the weight and velocity stored in the analysis unit. The analysis unit then stores the adjusted drive waveform.

摘要： There is described an ink-jet printer, which emits ink particles onto a recording medium to prints an image on the recording medium, and in which moving velocities of the ink particles are detected to perform stable emitting actions of the ink particles. The ink-jet printer includes: an ink-jetting head having a plurality of nozzles from which the ink particles are emitted; a velocity detecting section to detect moving velocities of the ink particles by measuring detection times at each of which each of the ink particles is detected; a calculating section to calculate an average value of the detection times measured by the velocity detecting section; and a head-drive controlling section that compares the average value calculated by the calculating section with a target value established in advance, to change a driving condition for the ink-jetting head so that the average value coincides with the target value.

摘要： A monitoring system monitors a pressure wave developed in the surrounding ambient environment during inkjet droplet formation. The monitoring system uses either acoustic, ultrasonic, or other pressure wave monitoring mechanisms, such as a laser vibrometer, an ultrasonic transducer, or an accelerometer sensor, for instance, a microphone to detect droplet formation. One sensor is incorporated in the printhead itself, while others may be located externally. The monitoring system generates information used to determine current levels of printhead performance, to which the printer may respond by adjusting print modes, servicing the printhead, adjusting droplet formation, or by providing an early warning before an inkjet cartridge is completely empty. During printhead manufacturing, an array of such sensors may be used in quality assurance to determine printhead performance. An inkjet printing mechanism is also equipped for using this monitoring system, and a monitoring method is also provided.

摘要： A thermal ink jet printing system includes a drop detector which is used in a feedback loop to optimize operational drive pulse parameters. By optimizing the drive pulse, drop velocity can be set within an optimal range above a inflection point in the transfer function of a print head drop generator. This provides near maximal drop velocity while minimizing heat dissipation at the heater resistors which would otherwise impair reliability and print head life. The drive circuitry includes a microcontroller including a pulse controller, a test generator and an algorithm function. During a maintenance procedure, for example, during start-up, the test generator causes the pulse controller to test each of many drop generators with a series of fixed-voltage rectangular pulses of digitally increasing pulse width. The pulse width at which a drop is first detected and the velocity of each drop detected is correlated with the width of the pulse which generated that drop. The algorithm function calculates an individual operational pulse width for each drop generator, or alternatively, a common operational pulse width for all drop generators, from the test data so collected. The pulse parameter value set so determined is programmed into the pulse controller and used during normal printing operation.
