    • A high strength T-joint for inflatable tubular is formed by forming a butt joint between the end of a first two tubular member and the side wall of a second tubular member. The opening in the side wall of the second tubular member is sized to match the end of the transverse support member so that a sealing flange can be applied to the inner surface of the joint to provide an airtight seal. A reinforcing flange comprising a disk-shaped piece of fabric having a center opening, is then bonded over the opening in the second tubular member. The center opening in the reinforcing flange is substantially smaller than the opening in the side rail member. Therefore the reinforcing flange substantially reduces the size of the discontinuity in the side wall of side rail member, thereby substantially increasing the circumferential (nullhoopnull) load capacity of the side wall of the side rail member and substantially increasing the rupture pressure of the joint.

    • An inflatable evacuation slide includes a feature for propelling disembarking passengers onto their feet at the toe end of the slide. In one embodiment, the slide comprises a fabric sliding surface stretched between two lateral side rail tubes. The lateral side rail tubes are supported by plurality of transverse tubes and transverse trusses such that the side rail tubes maintain the sliding surface in a taut condition suitable for use as a slide. The foot end of the tube includes a transverse tube having a reduced diameter and a lower surface that is suspended above the ground or other surface on which the foot end of the evacuation slide is resting. The suspended toe end transverse tube has a lower spring rate than a full-diameter transverse toe end tube. Therefore, the suspended toe end transverse tube provides the appropriate springiness for catapulting a sliding passenger onto his or her feet at the foot end of the slide notwithstanding the higher inflation pressure.

    • The basic component of the device is a bent tube. The included angle between the tube portions on each side of the bend is in a range of 90.degree. to 130.degree. with 110.degree. to 120.degree. preferred. The tube portions on opposite sides of the bend are of unequal lengths, 8 inches and 22 inches being an example. A stop is attached to the longer portion approximately two inches from the bend and extending into the included angle. The stop is triangular in plan form. The end of the stop facing the bend is at an excluded angle to the tube surface in a range of 90.degree. to 150.degree. with 135.degree. preferred. The height of the stop is in a range of 1/4 to 3/4 of an inch. The other sloped face is at an included angle with the tube surface in a range of 10.degree. to 30.degree.. Clamping apparatus is provided which is adjustable to prevent or allow linear relative motion between a line threaded through the tube and the tube. There may be an additional bend in the tube. The centerline of the tube lines in a flat plane. In use the device is installed on and clamped to the line, pulled into place with the bend on a lift cable and then maneuvered by the line to, in essence, make it climb over and past obstacles on the cable.

    • An emergency escape device in the form of a flexible strap- or rope-like support attached to an enclosure installed on an inside building wall beneath a window is disclosed. When the device is not in use, the flexible support is housed within the enclosure, which is designed to blend aesthetically with the decor of the window and the inside building wall. When in use, the flexible support is designed to extend from the interior of the enclosure, over the windowsill, and down the outside building wall. The proximal end of the flexible support is composed of fireproof steel cable or chain of sufficient length to extend from its point of attachment within the enclosure to the outside building wall. The flexible support may be provided with gripping areas and/or an adjustable harness to facilitate descent to a lower level window or to ground level.

    • The invention provides an inflatable rescue ramp having a pair of spaced inflatable tubes which join at one end to define a bow. A flexible web is mounted between and connects to the tubes at outside seams. That is, the web passes under each tube and is attached thereto on outside longitudinal seams, such that downward pressure on the web or ramp floor will cause adjacent portions of the tubes to axially rotate outwardly from each other to provide and enhance passageway on the web between the tubes. The rescue ramp is carried to the scene in a folded and compact state, with the above tubes being connected to a compressed air source. The rescue ramp is positioned on or near a firm surface and pointed toward a victim on an unfirm surface e.g. in an icy pond and the tubes inflated causing the ramp to pop or snake out of its packed condition and extend toward the victim with anchor lines from the tubes trailing. The rescuers grab the anchor lines and aim or position the inflating or inflated rescue ram in the direction of the victim and then secure the anchor lines and the near end of the rescue ramp on or near a firm surface e.g. the shore of a pond, whereupon a rescuer can hurry out on the so-positioned ramp to aid the victim. Subsequently the rescue ramp is deflated, folded and packed for future use.

    • The escape device of the present invention comprises an escape chute having an outer and an inner tube, the outer tube consisting of heat resistant material which surrounds the inner tube, the inner tube having a panel extending over a major portion such that an object in the chute contacting the panel will have its rate of descent retarded. A mounting bracket is associated with the upper end of the chute, the inner tube being attached to the mounting bracket such that a tapered entry from the upper end of the chute to a point below the upper end of the chute is formed. The outer tube is attached to the mounting bracket independent of the inner tube, so that the outer tube does not have to absorb load-carrying stress associated with objects descending in the chute. An air gap for insulation and ventilation is formed between the inner and outer tube.

    • A fire escape means is provided comprising a moveable cart for storing and, when needed, moving a fire escape into position for deployment out of a building, the fire escape having an upper, supporting entry ring member and a mesh tube attached to this upper support member, the mesh tube being substantially longer than the building height from which escape is necessary, and a lower, exit-opening support ring member attached to the lower end of the mesh tube. During storage, the fire escape is folded into the cart. The building is provided with at least one opening through which the fire escape is to be deployed. To the building near this opening is permanently attached a guide wire which extends from the opening at a desired angle to the ground where it is permanently affixed to a rigid support on the ground. To the lower ring support member, one end of a leash means is attached, the leash means having a snap-on mechanism removeably engageable to the guide wire attached to the other end. When escape is necessary, the cart is moved to the opening, the lower support member is attached to the guide wire by means of the snap-on leash, the lower support member then slides down the guide wire and the fire escape tube is deployed. Preferably there is a latch mechanism affixed to the rigid ground support which is capable of receiving and latching the snap-on mechanism and affixing it to the ground support when the lower support member descends to the ground. Once deployed, the fire escape tube can be descended by a person or persons to escape a fire in said building.
