    • This invention is a heat conserving or cooling suit enclosure of plastic sheet for a patient undergoing a medical procedure or for a patient with hypothermia or hyperthermia from any cause. The enclosure is preferably compartmentalized to allow the sealing off of non-effected parts of the body to reduce or increase heat loss and if necessary, to actively heat or cool those parts while permitting full access to the areas which are the subject of a surgical procedure. The enclosure may have separate elements for the arms and legs with each of the compartments having a longitudinal preferably upstanding seam, readily openable to allow access to those areas for manipulation and procedures and which can be resealed around tubes and conduits inserted into or attached to the patient. The patient is placed upon each open component part of the enclosure while it is flat and the part is subsequently closed about the patient by engaging the longitudinal seams. The parts of the enclosure normally consist of head, arm, leg, abdominal and thoracic parts. Additional adhesive which directly contacts the patient is provided at the transverse areas bordering compartments which can be employed when one adjacent compartment is to be maintained in open condition to prevent heat loss from non-involved parts of the body of the patient. One or more portals for connecting air circulating, heating or cooling and dehumidifying devices to said enclosure can be attached as required.

    • A flexible treatment cover flows conditioned air onto a person positioned under the cover to assist in maintaining proper body temperature. The treatment cover has an inflated in use position above and out of contact with such person and a deflated flat stored position. Generally, the cover comprises a plurality of arch shaped air pockets fabricated of flexible material and connected together in series adjacent one another. Openings between adjacent air pockets allow inflation air to flow from one pocket to the next until the pockets are fully inflated. A separate air chamber on the underside of the cover has perforations which allow conditioned air to continuously flow out of the chamber onto the person under the cover. Air is supplied to inflate the air pockets and to continuously supply conditioned air to the air chamber.

    • Hyperthermia can be safely induced in human and other mammalian bodies by exposing the body to an environment at a humidity of at least 97% R.H. and a temperature in the range of 80* to 110*F. It is preferred that the patient should breathe air at a similar humidity and temperature and if necessary a separate supply of breathing air under appropriate conditions may be provided. The invention also provides apparatus in which this treatment can be carried out, the apparatus including a thermally insulating enclosure which can be maintained at the humidity and temperature conditions specified together with an air heater and water evaporator or a steam generator capable of providing saturated water vapour at a controlled temperature containing fine water droplets. The humidifying and/or heating means can be regulated in response to physiological changes in the patient, and a control system may perform a cycle in which a treatment phase under the said conditions for a predetermined period is followed by a cooling phase in which humidity or the temperature is allowed to fall to a lower level.
