    • A method and apparatus for effectuating the reception and local storage of source information signals representative of a media program transmitted from a source information network preferably over a cable television channel on a pay-per-view basis is disclosed. A local intelligent set-top control unit communicates with a remote information network and a local storage device to coordinate the transmission of customer ordered media programs from the information network for storage on the local storage device. The local storage device is preferably a standard video cassette recorder (VCR) providing full VCR control functionality when presenting a stored media program on a television. A digital or optical data storage disk drive system may alternatively be employed to store source information signals downloaded from the remote information network. The intelligent set-top control unit communicates a pay-per-view billing signal to the information network upon playing of a downloaded media program, and provides protection against unauthorized copying. In an alternative configuration, a set-top control card is installed into a host computer system to coordinate the reception and local storage of downloaded media programs, and preferably provides a platform for interfacing with other home communication and electronic systems.

    • A method and apparatus for estimating the flyheight of an airbearing slider in a storage device. The slider floats on an airbearing over a rotating storage disk. The storage disk includes a washboard-sequence having washboard-sections each comprising surface profile variations having a different pitch. The pitches are selected from within a range of values likely to excite an airbearing resonance of the slider as the storage disk rotates at a rated storage disk velocity. For each of the washboard-sections, a maximum amplitude of flyheight modulation of the slider resulting from the slider floating over that washboard-section is measured. A determination is made of which washboard-section caused the largest measured flyheight modulation. The washboard-section having a pitch that provides an excitation frequency (when the disk is rotated at the rated storage disk velocity) that is closest to the actual airbearing resonance frequency of the slider will produce the largest flyheight modulation. The result of this determination is used to estimate the flyheight of the slider. For example, the flyheight may be estimated using an empirical formula that relates the flyheight and the resonance frequency. Once the flyheight is estimated, a determination may be made of whether the flyheight is unsatisfactory, e.g., below a minimum flyheight or decreasing. Appropriate action may be taken when the flyheight is unsatisfactory, such as notifying the user and/or scrubbing the slider. Accordingly, catastrophic head-crash may be avoided and the useful life of the storage device extended.

    • A position error signal amplitude indicative of the distance between an expected position of a magnetic head relative to the track centerline of a magnetic data storage and retrieval system and an actual position of the magnetic head relative to the track centerline is detected and filtered. The signal is filtered to generate a sway mode signal amplitude indicative of an oscillation of the actual position of the magnetic head relative to the track centerline in the frequency range of the filter. The absolute value of the sway mode signal amplitude is then determined. If the absolute value of the sway mode signal exceeds a predetermined threshold value that correlates to a high probability of impending a head-disk crash, a warning signal is propagated. Alternative embodiments similarly predict the possibility of head-disk crash on the basis of the maximum value of several samples of the position error signal and on the basis of the maximum value of several samples of the square of the position error signal amplitude

    • A method and apparatus for processing a readback signal obtained from a storage medium using a magnetoresistive (MR) element restores a thermal signal component of the signal. A readback signal obtained from the storage medium comprises a thermal component representing a thermal response of the MR element, and may further comprise a magnetic component representing servo or user data. The readback signal is filtered so as to degrade the thermal component of the signal, typically by amplification circuitry exhibiting a highpass filtering behavior. The highpass filtered readback signal is further filtered using a lowpass filter. The filtered signal is sampled, and a sliding window comprising a series of binary values is applied to groups of the signal samples to produce a plurality of signal sample values for each of the signal sample groups. The signal sample values for each of the signal sample groups are summed to produce a restored thermal signal substantially representative of the thermal component of the readback signal. A highpass magnetic readback signal may also be operated on to produce a restored thermal component. A sampled ternary signal is produced by a recording channel using the readback signal as an input. A sliding window is applied to groups of the ternary signal samples to produce signal sample values for each of the ternary signal sample groups. The signal sample values are summed for each of the ternary signal sample groups to produce a restored thermal signal substantially representative of the thermal component of the readback signal.

    • An apparatus and method for extending the service life of an MR element incorporated in a read/write head involves detecting periods of disk drive system inactivity and selectively switching between the heads for purposes of reading servo information during the inactive periods. Switching between heads may involve selecting each of the heads for reading servo information during one or more periods of disk drive system inactivity or selecting each of the heads in sequence during a respective period of system inactivity. Selecting between heads may also involve selecting a head having a minimum of usage, such as a head having an MR element with a minimum of cumulative operational time or energy dissipation relative to other MR elements provided in the disk drive system. Selecting between heads may further include selectively activating each of the heads for reading servo information for a predetermined duration of time during one or more periods of system idleness. An alternative method involves moving the head to a target location, such as a location of maximum head-to-disk clearance, over a surface of a data storage disk, and reducing the servo sampling rate during a period of system inactivity. Reducing the servo sampling rate involves reducing the rate from a nominal number of servo samples per disk revolution to a reduced number of servo samples per disk revolution, such as one servo sample per disk revolution. The MR elements may be selectively activated during idle periods so as to further reduce usage of the MR elements.

    • A multimedia direct access storage device and a method for transferring source program signals representative of a compressed digital multimedia program to and from the direct access storage device are disclosed. A multimedia program is transmitted from a multimedia server as a custom ordered series of discrete program segments and received by the multimedia direct access storage device, which buffers the compressed program segments for subsequent presentation on a local display monitor. The multimedia direct access storage device is preferably incorporated as a component of a local set-top control system for buffering a predetermined number of compressed program segments received from the multimedia server, some of which may be non-sequentially ordered and others of which may be sequentially ordered. A novel formatting methodology provides for the sequential presentation of the program segments asynchronously distributed on one or more data storage disks disposed in the direct access storage device. A user-definable presentation control window for performing local VCR-type presentation control functions for the portion of a multimedia program buffered in the direct access storage device is also provided through the novel formatting methodology.
