    • A low cost building structure includes a support frame having a lateral cross section in the shape of a trapezium. The structure's enlarged base increases its stability while the inwardly inclined forward and aft supports increase its strength while reducing wind loading forces. Designed for field assembly and including a metal support frame as well as metal roof and wall panels in a preferred embodiment, the building structure is particularly adapted for use as a carport or as a garage wherein a conventional door may be mounted adjacent an open front portion thereof. The side walls covering the trapezium-shaped support frame members may be extended forward to provide a vertical, or near vertical, front wall while retaining the advantages of the trapezium shape. The roof is comprised of a one-piece section which is bent at the ridge eliminating the need for a ridge cap.

    • A generally planar structural insulated panel for use in the wall of a building structure includes an inner core of insulating material such as plastic foam. Disposed on and attached to opposed surfaces of the insulating core are outer facings in the form of thick sheets of paper impregnated with plastic such as urethane, polystyrene or polyisocyanurate. The plastic impregnated paper (PIP) sheets are 0.14″ to 0.70″ thick and extend several inches beyond the edges of the panel's insulating core. The PIP sheets provide the panel with high tensile strength and the peripheral edges of the PIP sheets are adapted to receive coupling pins such as nails, screws or staples for mounting the panel to 2× dimensional lumber members in the building structure. The high tensile strength of the PIP sheets also provides secure mounting of the panel to the adjacent structural members. Compression struts are provided within the panel's insulating foam core and inside the panel's outer PIP facings to accommodate large axial loading on the panel. The inner PIP sheet may have attached thereto a gypsum or cementous composite sheet to provide a finished panel when installed in a building structure. Adjacent PIP facings of a pair of structural panels may be arranged in an overlapping manner and connected to a structural member such as a spline or stud to provide a high strength, sealed connection between the panels.

    • A structural insulated panel for building construction includes a planar, rigid insulating core such as of lightweight plastic foam having opposed surfaces to which are bonded respective plastic impregnated paper (PIP) sheets. Disposed symmetrically either on the inner surfaces of the PIP sheets, and thus within the panel's insulating foam core, or on the outer surfaces of the PIP sheets are spaced reinforcing strips. The reinforcing strips may be flat or formed, such as in the shape of a channel, may be of metal, gypsum composites, or wood, and are provided with an adhesive coating for bonding to the insulating foam core and a PIP sheet. The spaced metal strips increase the panel's bending strength and serve as an attachment base for internal and external finished faces, while the PIP sheets provide the panel with high tensile strength. The adhesive coating on the metal reinforcing strips further increases panel strength. The metal strips may also be provided with an outer gypsum coating to protect the metal strip from heat and/or fire. The panels may be used in walls, roofs or floors. When used in a wall, top and bottom U-shaped metal channels may be respectively positioned on upper and lower edges of the panel and attached to respective upper and lower edges of the reinforcing strips within the panel by conventional means such as screws. Adjacent panels may be joined by metal strips attached such as by screws or clips to the panels' top and bottom edge channels.

    • A generally planar structural insulated panel for building construction includes interior and exterior facings of weather resistant plastic impregnated paper (PIP) disposed on opposed outer surfaces of an inner insulating core such as of plastic foam or an agricultural product such as wheatboard or strawboard. Spaced elongated, linear studs are attached to either the outer or inner surface of one or both of the PIP facings. The spaced studs, which are preferably comprised of metal or wood, increase the panel's strength, facilitate connecting the panel to a building structure in a secure manner, and facilitate attachment of a structural facing such as of gypsum or cementous composite or exterior siding to the panel. When attached to the inner surface of a PIP facing, the stud is disposed in the panel's insulating core. When disposed on the outer surface of a PIP facing, the studs provide a gap between a PIP facing and an outer facing such as of exterior siding to allow for water drainage. In one embodiment, slots are provided between the insulating core and the interior and exterior facings on one or more edges of the panel or about the entire periphery of the panel for receiving a metal C-shaped channel, or spline. The peripheral C-shaped channel substantially increases panel strength, and facilitates connecting adjacent panels together as well as installing the panel in a building structure with or without the use of 2× dimensional structural lumber.

    • An umbrella-shaped shelter includes a single vertical support member either permanently mounted to a support surface, such as the ground, or removably attached to a mounting base disposed on or in the support surface. The lower end of the vertical support member may be mounted in a concrete base, removably inserted in a tubular sleeve disposed in the support surface, or may be attached to the support surface using anchor bolts, or ground anchors. In one embodiment, the lower end of the vertical support member is attached to a base including outwardly extending, radially disposed base members which, in turn, are mounted to the support surface such as by ground anchors. Concentrically disposed about and attached to an upper end of the vertical support member by radially extending frame members is a circular ring. A fabric cover is disposed over a cap on the upper end of the vertical support member and about the circular ring. Disposed on the peripheral edge of the generally circular fabric cover is a hem which is adapted to receive a cable, or rope, extending about the periphery of the fabric cover. The cable or rope is pulled tight and secured with the fabric cover disposed over the upper end of the vertical support member and its peripheral edge disposed about the circular ring to securely attach the fabric cover under tension to the vertical support member and circular ring, with tension on the cover adjustable as desired.

    • An asymmetric structural insulated panel for building construction includes a generally planar insulating foam core such as of expanded polystyrene, urethane or polyisocyanurate plastic. Adhered to a first surface of the insulating foam core is an outer facing of a conventional building material such as wood, oriented strand board (OSB), gypsum composite or cement. Adhered to a second opposed surface of the insulating foam core by a conventional adhesive is a thin, high strength sheet of paper impregnated with plastic such as polyisocyanurate. The plastic impregnated paper provides a high tensile strength for the structural insulated panel to accommodate large transverse loads on the panel. Elongated “nailing” members may be affixed in a spaced manner to the inner or outer surface of the plastic impregnated paper to also provide this surface of the panel with high compressive strength and to permit the panel to withstand large axial loads. The nailer strips, which may be of wood or metal, also facilitate attaching the structural insulated panel to composite gypsum wallboard, commonly used in conventional building construction.

    • A spline for joining two adjacent structural insulated panels each having an insulating core disposed between and joined to first and second outer facings includes a backer member attached to a metal strip by a conventional coupler such as an adhesive. The backer member and metal strip form an elongated, linear combination, and the outer surface of the backer member may be provided with a groove or slot extending the length thereof. The backer member slot facilitates bending or folding the backer plate and metal strip combination along the length thereof into two connected sections for use as a spline. The angled spline is used for connecting adjacent panels which may be oriented at a relative angle &agr;, where &agr;>0°, by placing each section of the spline in intimate contact with a respective panel along the lengths thereof. Conventional connectors such as screws or nails are inserted through each panel and its associated spline section to connect adjacent panels. In one embodiment, the angled spline is positioned in abutting contact with and attached to each of the inner and outer facings of a pair of connected panels to increase the strength of the joint. The backer member may be comprised of any of the more common building materials such as wood or a gypsum or cement composite.
