    • A drop-on-demand multi-tone printing apparatus has a series of channels arranged to receive ink from a source. Each channel has a respective ink outlet. Each adjacent pair of the channels is separated by a respective dividing wall, and each dividing wall is movable in response to a respective pulsed electrical signal to apply pressure pulses to the respective pair of the channels, whereby ink can be ejected from the outlets and deposited onto a recording medium. A respective pulsed electrical signal is developed for each channel in dependence upon whether ink is to be ejected from that channel, the signals for adjacent pairs of the channels temporally overlapping each other and not being in phase with each other.

    • A method of manufacturing one or more nozzles for an ink jet printhead initially comprises bonding a nozzle plate to the ink ejection end of the printhead. A mask is then secured in contact with the nozzle plate, the mask having a plurality of apertures each defining a respective nozzle exit. Laser radiation applied to the mask exposes the areas defined by the apertures to ablate the plate material between the nozzle exits on the external surface of the plate and corresponding nozzle inlets on the opposite surface of the plate. The assembly comprising the printhead, plate and mask is rocked during the exposure step to increase the area of the nozzle inlet relative to its outlet. Also, prior to the nozzle formation step, one or more ink troughs may be provided for supplying an external source of ink for each nozzle. The ink troughs, which may be formed using laser ablation techniques similar to those used in the formation of the nozzles, facilitate a continuous, positive flow of ink through the nozzles.

    • A vacuum drum assembly for a printing machine has a drum with an array of passageways distributed along its length and around its periphery to permit airflow from outside the drum to inside the drum in response to reduced air pressure inside the drum. An array of valves are movable between a closed position in which that valve restricts at least one of the passageways and an open position in which the restriction of the same passageways is reduced. When a partial area of the drum is wrapped with a sheet of material, at least some of the passageway valves adjacent the edges of that area are open, and the valves for the passageways not covered by the sheet and not adjacent the edges of that area are closed. The drum open area is regulated to be small in regions where there is no paper. Accordingly, the open area of the drum is adapted to the paper shape and size and the paper position on the drum, while minimizing the required suction flow. A duplex printing machine has two such vacuum drum assemblies with their drums parallel. The air pressure inside the drums is reduced and the drums are counter-rotated. Printing material is fed to the first drum and held on the first drum by vacuum and rotated therewith. A first print head prints on one side of the material. The material is released from the first drum in a direction towards the second drum and held on the second drum by vacuum and rotated therewith. A second print head then prints on the material on the second drum. The material is then released from the second drum.
