摘要： An improved well packing device of the type having an inflatable bladder reinforced with a reinforcing material, and also having an annular end piece attached to the inflatable bladder. The reinforcing material is looped at one end about a toroidal member. This toroidal member is contained in an annular cavity of the end piece. A shoulder portion of the end piece forms a slot, narrower than the toroidal member, through which the reinforcing material extends, thus providing an improved connection between the inflatable bladder and the end piece.

A method of swelling a swellable material includes the steps of: providing the swellable material which is capable of swelling when contacted by a fluid; positioning the swellable material in an environment in which the swellable material is contacted by another fluid which does not cause the material to swell; and swelling the swellable material by contacting the swellable material with the first fluid while the swellable material remains in contact with the other fluid.

摘要： A downhole tool apparatus and methods of drilling the apparatus. The apparatus may include, but is not limited to, packers and bridge plugs utilizing non-metallic slip components. The non-metallic material may include engineering grade plastics. In one embodiment, the slips are separate and held in place in an initial position around the slip wedge by a retainer ring. In another embodiment, the slips are integrally formed with a ring portion which holds the slips in the initial position around the wedge; in this embodiment, the ring portion is made of a fracturable non-metallic material which fractures during a setting operation to separate the slips. Methods of drilling out the apparatus without significant variations in the drilling speed and weight applied to the drill bit may be employed. Alternative drill bit types, such as polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bits may also be used.

摘要： A hydraulic setting tool for packers. The setting tool comprises a case with a ball valve therein, a bypass passageway for bypassing around the ball valve when the ball valve is in a closed position, a fill valve for closing the bypass passageway when desired, and a packer setting sleeve for hydraulically setting a packer attached below the setting tool. The fill valve is preferably characterized by a sliding sleeve valve annularly disposed on a stationary mandrel in the case and is movable in response to a pressure in the tool. The packer setting sleeve is attached to a setting piston which may be actuated in response to a first differential pressure between the tool string and a well annulus. A slidable mandrel is provided in operative association with the ball valve and is movable in response to a second differential pressure between the well annulus and the tool string. The second differential pressure also acts to raise the setting piston and setting sleeve to a retracted position spaced away from the packer. A method of positioning and setting a packer using the setting tool is also disclosed.
