    • Provided is a method, system, and program for releasing storage space in a first and second storage devices. Updates to the first storage device are copied to the second storage device to provide secondary storage for the updates. A first and second tables map data sets to addresses in the first and second storage devices, respectively. A first command is detected to invalidate data sets in the first table. The addresses in the first table comprise virtual addresses, and a third table provides a mapping of the virtual addresses to physical storage locations in the first storage device. A second command is generated to update the second table to invalidate the data sets in the second storage device invalidated in the first table by the first command. A third command is detected to invalidate the virtual addresses in the third table used by the data sets invalidated in the first table to free the physical storage locations in the first storage device pointed to by the invalidated virtual addresses. A fourth command is generated that is directed to the physical storage locations in the second storage device used by the invalidated data sets.

    • Disclosed is a system for copying data sets from a first storage device to a second storage device. The first storage device is managed by a first controller and the second storage device is managed by a second controller. The first controller receives a command to copy a plurality of data sets from the first storage device to the second storage device. First and second data structures are generated to include fields corresponding to the data sets. The fields initially indicate that the data sets have not been copied. For the data sets subject to the copy command, the first controller transfers a copy of the data set to the second controller. The second controller stores the copy of the data set received from the first controller in the second storage device. The field in the first data structure corresponding to the data set copied to the second storage device is then modified to indicate that the data set was copied to the second storage device. The field in the second data structure corresponding to the data set the second controller stores in the second storage device is also modified to indicate that the data set was stored in the second storage device.

    • A method in a data processing system for automatically terminating or resuming backup copy sessions after an abnormal interrupt or reset notification occurrence during a backup copy process. A status indication is entered into activity tables associated with a plurality of storage subsystems and devices within a data processing system in response to initiation of a backup copy session. Status indications are then entered upon successful completion of a backup copy session within the data processing system. The indications within the activity tables are reviewed to determine the status of a backup copy session upon restarting a resource manager, abnormal termination of a backup copy program, or an operating system initial program load. If a backup copy session has been initiated but not completed, the backup copy session is then terminated. The indications within the activity tables are also reviewed to determine the status of a backup copy session if a reset notification is raised by a storage subsystem. The tracks extents which are active for a volume associated with a particular session identification are determined. A comparison is then made between the tracks extents which are active and the volume and extent information associated with a physical session identification. If a match exists between the tracks extents which are active and the volume and extent information associated with a physical session identification, the backup copy session resumes. If a match does not exist, the backup copy session is terminated.

    • A data storage system atomically suspends multiple duplex pairs across either a single storage subsystem or multiple storage subsystems. The duplex pairs are suspended such that the data on the secondary DASDs of the duplex pairs is maintained in a sequence consistent order. A host processor in the data storage system running an application generates records and record updates to be written to the primary DASDs of the duplex pairs. The storage controller directs copies of the records and record updates to the secondary DASDs of the duplex pairs. Sequence consistency is maintained on the secondary DASDs by quiescing the duplex pairs and then suspending the duplex pairs with change recording. Quiescing the duplex pairs allows any current write I/O in progress to complete to the primary DASD. The storage controller then locks out any subsequent write I/O from the host processor by raising a long busy signal to such subsequent write requests. Suspending the duplex pairs with change recording directs the storage controller to mark the physical address of the primary DASD which the application in the host processor updates between the time the duplex pair is suspended and then is reestablished.
