    • A rotary drum which serves to transport rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry or sheet-like components of such articles has a peripheral surface which is formed with rows of axially parallel suction ports connectable to a suction generating device to attract the articles or their components to the peripheral surface of the drum. If the lengthh of rod-shaped articles is changed, or if the width of web- or strip-shaped components of articles is changed, the effective length of the rows of suction ports is changed accordingly to avoid unnecessary flow of air into non-overlapped suction ports. The effective length of the rows of suction ports is varied in response to turning of apertured tubes which are inwardly adjacent the rows of suction ports and can be jointly turned to connect the suction generating device with a first group of ports in the respective row in first angular positions of the pipes and to connect the suction generating device with second groups of suction ports in second angular positions of the pipes.

    • Apparatus for convoluting adhesive-coated uniting bands around groups of coaxial plain cigarettes and filter rod sections in a filter tipping machine has a drum-shaped conveyor whose peripheral surface has equidistant axially parallel flutes for discrete groups and suction ports to attract uniting bands behind the groups as well as to attract the groups to the respective flutes during certain parts of each revolution of the conveyor. Successive groups are caused to roll about their own axes to thereby convert the adjacent uniting bands into tubes during travel through an arcuate gap which is defined by the peripheral surface of the conveyor and the adjacent concave surface of a stationary rolling member. In order to prevent abrupt setting of successive groups into rotary motion about their axes, the apparatus employs a rotor with radially extending projections which are adjacent the inlet of the gap and are caused to orbit at a speed less than the peripheral speed of the conveyor so that each group is set in rotary motion about its axis in two stages, first at a lower speed by a projection and thereupon at a higher speed by the concave surface. This reduces the likelihood of defacing and/or otherwise affecting the desirable characteristics of the groups of rod-shaped articles and of the uniting bands.

    • A testing apparatus for cigarettes or the like has a rotary drum having axially parallel flutes for cigarettes, at least one ring-shaped carrier which is adjacent to one end and is driven at the speed of the drum about an axis which makes a small acute angle with the axis of the drum so that successive increments of the carrier approach the respective end of the drum during travel toward a testing station and move away from the drum during travel beyond the testing station. The carrier supports engaging elements in the form of pins or elastic sleeves which engage the adjacent ends of cigarettes during travel past the testing station. The pins can penetrate into relatively soft fillers of cigarettes and thereby cause a transducer to produce signals which are used for segregation of the respective cigarettes. The sleeves can engage the ends of wrappers of cigarettes during travel past the testing station to admit into the fillers a pressurized testing fluid or to draw a testing fluid through the fillers. The pressure of testing fluid is monitored by a transducer which produces signals for ejection of cigarettes having leaky wrappers because the pressure of fluid which passes through such defective wrappers deviates from a predetermined range of pressures which are indicative of satisfactory wrappers.

    • A continuous alkoxylation process for the production of polyether polyols is disclosed. The process comprises the use of a plurality of reaction modules each having an outer tube and an inner tube with annular chamber between them. A spiral reaction tube is spaced from the inner tube and winds around the inner tube within the annular chamber. The spiral reaction tube includes an inlet and an outlet, each of which extend through said outer tube. A heat exchange medium flows through the annular chamber and controls the reaction temperature in the spiral reaction tube. The process comprises continuously forming an initial reaction mixture of at least one alkylene oxide and an initiator having at least one reactive hydrogen which is reactive to the alkylene oxide. Continuously flowing the initial reaction mixture through a first spiral reaction tube having an internal diameter and a spiral diameter that promote a pseudo-turbulent flow of the initial reaction mixture through the first spiral reaction tube to form a reaction product. Then flowing the reaction product into a second spiral reaction tube and adding a catalyst and an alkylene oxide to the reaction product, the second spiral reaction tube having an internal diameter and a spiral diameter that promote a pseudo-turbulent flow of the reaction product, the catalyst and the alkylene oxide in the second spiral reaction tube.
