A portion of the screw length may also include threads to assist in inserting and anchoring the screw into a vertebral member. In use, the bone growth material is loaded into one or more of the slots. Once loaded, the screw may be inserted into the vertebral member to a predetermined depth. At this depth, the slots deliver the bone growth material to a position to allow for bone growth to occur.

摘要： The present invention provides screening methods for identifying a compound that induces loss of the lentiviral protein Vpr; screening methods for identifying compounds that inhibit the peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase (PPIase) activity of a protein that catalyzes cis-trans isomerization of cis-peptidylprolyl bonds in Vpr; and compounds identified by the screening methods. The compounds are useful for treating a lentiviral infection. The present invention further provides methods of inducing loss of the lentiviral protein Vpr; methods of inhibiting lentivirus viral replication; and methods of treating a lentivirus infection in an individual. The methods generally involve administering to an individual infected with the lentivirus an effective amount of a compound that induces Vpr loss and/or that inhibits PPIase activity of a protein that catalyzes cis-trans isomerization of cis-peptidylprolyl bonds in Vpr.

摘要： Disclosed herein is a method for inducing Hsp72 production in a cell. The method involves contacting the cell transiently with a proteasome inhibitor in an amount sufficient to induce Hsp72 production. Preferably Hsp72 levels are induced to a level sufficient for the suppression of stress-activated kinase activity attributable, for example, to a stress-activated kinase selected from the group consisting of JNK and p38. The method has both in vitro and in vivo applications. Also disclosed is a method of the type described above is applied specifically to aged cells. Also disclosed is a method for treating pathologies associated with apoptosis and inflammation in an individual. The method involves administering to the individual a proteasome inhibitor in an amount sufficient to induce Hsp72 production. In a preferred embodiment of the therapeutic method, the individual is an aged individual. Stress-induced pathologies such as ischemia are particularly important with respect to the therapeutic aspect of the invention. Also disclosed is a method for identifying an organic compound having the ability to induce Hsp72 levels in aged cells to a level sufficient to suppress stress-activated kinase activity.

摘要： A method and apparatus for the fixation of bone fractures, limb lengthening, and the correction of deformities uses an improved composite plastic carbon fiber ring that is formed in a mold, or machined with a stepped end portion that allows half rings to be assembled in a common plane. The method can use a mold wherein multiple rings can be formed by stacking the rings with a Teflon layer therebetween and wherein circumferential braid reinforcement of carbon fiber adds strength at the circumferential inner and outer curved surfaces of the rings and half rings.
