    • A piston includes a circumferential groove having a dynamic split seal ring having a flat axially facing surface, a static seal ring having a flat axially facing surface abutting the flat surface of the dynamic seal ring, and a spring mounted within the groove. The spring exerts an axial force on the static seal ring that serves to distribute the axial load with a static seal over the dynamic split seal, thereby preventing shuttling of the split seal within the groove and restricting the leak path of the seal. Preferably, the static seal ring is a polymer and can be an L-ring, a load ring with a flange that abuts the piston body, or flanged designs. In addition, a load ring can be fitted between the L-ring and the spring. The split seal ring has at least one radial spring mounted within the seal ring to create a radial force on the split seal ring. The piston can also include a sleeve that mounts to the piston body, the sleeve forming a wall of the groove. The piston can be a displacer mounted within a cylinder of a refrigerator.

    • In a fast partial regeneration process, the second stage of a cryopump is heated as purge gas is applied to the cryopump. In a test loop, the purge gas is turned off and the roughing valve is opened. If the cryopump is judged to be sufficiently empty of gases from the second stage by being roughed to a sufficiently low pressure in a short period of time the system proceeds to a reconditioning phase. If the system fails the test, however, it is repurged with a burst of warm purge gas and then retested. After passing the emptiness test, the pressure is further reduced by the roughing pump as heat is applied to the second stage. The heat is then turned off for cool down as the system continues to be rough pumped to a base pressure. At about the base pressure, the roughing valve is cycled to maintain the cryopump pressure at a level near to the base pressure. Where multiple cryopumps are coupled to a common roughing pump manifold, they are processed through a partial regeneration sequence in lock step to avoid cross contamination.

    • A secondary pressure relief valve assembly is coupled to a cryopump relief valve for reducing the gas load on the cryopump. The pressure relief valve assembly comprises a main housing mounted to a crypoump exhaust conduit enclosing that portion of the cryopump valve typically exposed to the external environment. A second relief valve is mounted to the main housing and operates in series with the cryopump valve to exhaust pressurized gases from the cryopump during regeneration. A pump is coupled to a port on the main housing and maintains a pressure within the main housing which is less than the pressure of the external environment. As such, the pressure differential across the cyropump valve is reduced. Since the leakage and permeation gas loads are linearly related to the pressure differential, they are correspondingly reduced.

    • A recondenser with a primary heat exchanging surface for recondensing boil-off within a cryostat provides a second heat exchanging surface for removing heat leak into the cryostat. The second surface is cooled by the same working fluid that cools the primary surface, but at a temperature intermediate that of the primary surface and associated cooling apparatus which is remote from the cryostat. An intermediate transfer line transfers working fluid from an intermediate portion of the cooling apparatus to the second surface which is in heat exchange relation with a radiation shield of the cryostat but is out of physical contact with the radiation shield. The cooling apparatus includes a mechanical refrigerator which further cools working fluid returned from the second surface through the intermediate transfer line. The intermediate transfer line is preferably positioned in a non-contact helical manner about a final transfer line which carries the working fluid to the primary surface. The two transfer lines form an assembly which is less than about one inch in outer diameter and is removeably positioned in the cryostat. The intermediate transfer line is thermally isolated from the final transfer line within the assembly.
