    • A fuel dispensing and vapor recovery nozzle includes a body portion having a fuel passageway therethrough, a main valve in the fuel passageway for controlling the flow of fuel therethrough, a manually operable valve actuating lever for opening the main valve, a pivot member mounting the lever for pivotal movement, an elongate pivot mounting member carrying the pivot member and mounted for sliding longitudinal movement, a venturi responsive to fuel flow through the fuel passageway for creating a vacuum, a shut-off passageway from the venturi to the spout adapted to be closed when the fuel tank is filled, a locking device normally locking the pivot mounting member against longitudinal movement so that the pivot member is stationary and the lever is operable to open the main valve, a vacuum responsive device for rendering the locking device inoperable upon the shut-off passageway becoming blocked, a vapor recovery passageway in the body portion extending longitudinally therethrough, a vapor recovery passageway in the spout and having a large area inlet in the side of the spout near but spaced from the outer end of the spout and an outlet opening in the side of the spout near but externally of the body portion and vapor confinement and a directing sleeve for confining vapors leaving the outlet opening and directing those vapors into the vapor recovery passageway in the body portion.

    • A remote laser locator system for viewing a wide field of view and detecting the angular position of a remote laser. A laser beam directed toward the sensor from any position within a 90 degree circular field-of-view can be detected to a positional accuracy of less than 0.1 degree in a two-axis coordinate system. The system utilizes an inline or coaxial optical sensor having field-of-view (FOV) optics that compress the field-of-view. The compressed output from the FOV optics is directed through a polarizer and filter to a phase shifter. The phase shifter, a pair of birefringent crystals, encodes the angle of incidence of the laser beam as a phase shift between the two components of the polarized input beam. Subsequently, an analyzer such as a Wollaston prism decomposes the beam into two linear component beams. These component beams are processed through a second phase shifter and an analyzer pair which are rotated axially with respect to the first pair to provide four distinct component beams. These components are condensed through a reimager lens and coupled to an array of intensity detectors. The array detector outputs are then combined to provide two normalized signal proportional to a trigonometric function of the two components of the angle of incidence of the laser beam, indicative of its position in space.

    • The all-optical pulse generating and amplifying system utilizes a phosphor that is excited by input light of a first wavelength and, in response, emits light of a second wavelength. The light emitted by the phosphor illuminates a bistable element which, at a pre-fixed intensity of the phosphor-emitted light, switches from non-transmissive state to transmissive state, thereby allowing the exit of light (also of first wavelength) emitted by an output light source as light pulse output of the system. An inhibitory light that also passes through the bistable element during its transmissive state quenches the phosphor light emission and returns the bistable element to its non-transmissive state and re-starts the process toward the next transmissive state. By gating the intensity, via selected non-linearity of the bistable element, of the light output in proportion to the intensity of the input light, the system can also function as an amplifier.

    • The design of past vehicles having internal combustion engines has focused attention toward aerodynamic principles. However, present day vehicles have done little to reconfigure the vehicle's engine systems in order to enhance the aerodynamics of the vehicle. The present invention allows for enhancements of the aerodynamics of the vehicle by utilizing a dry sump means 60 within a dry sump lubricated engine 36 which eliminates a conventional oil pan and allows a replacing cover 46 to be smaller and more shallow thereby lowering the overall profile of the engine 36. The additional use of a separately mounted oil cooler 76 reduces the heat load to a radiator 80 thereby decreasing the necessary size for the radiator 80. The smaller radiator 80 decreases the vertical spatial requirements for the engine 36. By lowering the overall profile of the engine 36, with both the more shallow cover 46 and the smaller radiator 80, a vehicle hood 18 can be manufactured with an increased slope. The increased slope of the vehicle's hood 18 enhances the aerodynamics of the vehicle 12 by reducing air drag.

    • A base mount supports a secondary mount in surface facing relation and a pair of these mount assemblies are positioned in spaced relation to receive a pallet stringer between them. The mounts support circular cutter discs which are disposed in axially aligned pairs and also in laterally aligned pairs whereby to be capable of severing nails on opposite edges of a stringer in a single pass of a stringer through the space between the laterally spaced mounts. The base mounts support the secondary mounts and are capable of being retrofitted to existing machines. The base and secondary mounts are secured by cross plates that have a cutting edge to form a backup cutter for the cutter discs. The secondary mounts are hingedly supported on the base mounts by a cross hinge at the rear of the mounts and a spring and limit assembly is provided between the mounts to allow adjustment of the mounts for different dimensioned stringers. The cutter discs are supported on the mounts by bearings that provide lateral adjustment of the cutter discs. The bearings are compact in their structure and compactly positioned in the mounts for ruggedness and long life.
