    • A torque converter is provided with a lockup device that functions as a clutch and as an elastic coupling mechanism. In one embodiment, the lockup device is configured to eliminate an outer cylindrical portion from its piston. Preferably, a spring holder has an outer portion arranged radially outside the torsion springs, while a drive plate has a cylindrical portion restricting radial movement of the spring holder. In other embodiments, the elastic coupling mechanism is configured with a sufficient number of sets of elastic members that act together in the rotational direction as if they were arranged end to end. The elastic coupling mechanism has one set of springs disposed radially inward of another set of springs. A spring holder connects first and second sets of springs such that the first and second sets of springs act together in the rotational direction as if they were arranged end to end.

    • A piston (2) is disposed between a front cover and a turbine of a torque converter and is adapted to move in an axial direction in response to changes in the hydraulic fluid pressure. The piston (2) includes a disc-shaped plate portion (11), a flat annular portion (12), and an annular rim portion (13). The flat annular portion (12) is formed at an outer periphery of the disc-shaped plate (11), and is adapted to frictionally engage a portion of the front cover. The annular rim portion (13) is formed on an outer peripheral edge of the flat annular portion (12) and extends axially toward the turbine. The annular rim portion (13) supports the radial outer side of torsion springs disposed on an inner periphery thereof. By forming notches (14) in the annular rim portion (13), the rigidity of the flat annular portion (12) is reduced. Reducing the rigidity of the flat annular portion (12) makes the flat annular portion (12) more flexible so that upon engagement with the front cover, the flat annular portion (12) may more readily conform to the shape of the front cover in the event that the front cover is formed with irregularities or slightly undulating surfaces.

    • A lock-up damper device for a torque converter comprising a piston clutch plate slidable in axial direction and equipped with a friction facing pressed on a front cover and a driven plate interconnected to a turbine in between the front cover and the turbine. The piston clutch plate and the driven plate are coupled to each other, for relative rotation by torsion springs arranged longitudinal in circumferential direction of such plates. The torsion springs are installed at outer and inner peripheral parts of the plates. The torsion springs installed on the inner peripheral part of said plates is in contact at at least their radial outer peripheral, radial inner peripheral and side portions between said radial outer and inner peripheries with a wall of a concave portion formed on the piston clutch plate, and the torsion springs installed on the outer and inner peripheral parts are held by the drive plate secured to the piston clutch plate.

    • To allow attachment of pinion shafts in their phased states only in simple steps which do not require a crimping step and a special device. A pinion shaft support structure for a planetary gear includes pinion gears, pinion shafts for pivotally supporting the pinion gears, and a carrier having a plurality of shaft support holes for rotatably supporting the pinion shafts, the pinion shafts being supported by the shaft support holes. The pinion shaft support structure includes stepped portions formed on end surfaces of the pinion shafts and a fall-out prevention washer which is mounted on the carrier to be capable of locking the stepped portions. An outer circumferential rim of the fall-out prevention washer mounted on the carrier faces the stepped portions of the respective pinion shafts inserted into the plurality of respective shaft support holes and is capable of locking the stepped portions, and the pinion shafts are thereby positioned (phased) in their rotational directions.
