    • A method and a device for detecting the degree of pollution in an operational converter are disclosed. An operating state of at least one of the converter components that is exposed to the ambient air is determined and a corresponding operating state of said component in an unpolluted state is determined. The two operating states are then compared and the calculated comparison value is used as a measurement for the degree of pollution of the converter. Detecting the degree of pollution of an operational converter permits a reduction in the number of breakdowns caused by unprotected operation of a converter, and associated disadvantages such as costs and damage to a company's image.

    • The invention relates to a method for determining the chance of a disturbance-free operation of a frequency converter (2) connected to a feeding network (18). According to the invention, during the operation of said frequency converter (2), an intermediate circuit voltage (UZK) is continuously measured and a network-side intermediate circuit current (iZKmains) is continuously determined; these measuring quantities are compared with pre-determined operating values of the frequency converter (2), and quantities which are higher or lower than said values are respectively stored; and the frequency (Hij) of said higher and lower measuring quantities is determined and converted into a characteristic number for the quality of the feeding network (18). As said characteristic number decreases, the chance of a disturbance-free operation of the frequency converter (2) increases. In this way, a frequency converter (2) is able to detect the risk of appliance disturbance or failure as a result of network disturbances before the operation is interrupted.

    • A drive controller for a self-commutated converter providing a “safe stop” is described. The converter has two half-bridges, and the drive controller includes two control circuits having outputs operatively connected to respective converter valves of the half-bridges. Pulse inhibiting controllers are associated with the control circuits in one-to-one correspondence. The drive controller further includes a plurality of switches, each switch defining a disconnectable pulse inhibiting path and receiving control signals from one of the pulse inhibiting controllers. Each of the pulse inhibiting paths has an input which is connected to an external voltage, and an output which is connected, on one hand, via a diagnostic line to a corresponding pulse inhibiting controller and, on the other hand, to a control input of the corresponding control circuit. The switches can therefore be cyclically tested without service interruption.

    • A method and a device for shutting down a drive during a power outage are disclosed. The method and device include a matrix converter, several commutation capacitors on the power line side, a switch unit on the power line side and a resistor unit.
