    • A ceiling-mounted passive infrared detector assembly (30) that has three main components: a junction box (10) which is adapted to be mounted within an opening in a ceiling; a cover (44) adapted to mate with the junction box (10); and an electronic passive infrared detector subassembly (43) including an infrared sensor (42) and processing circuitry (45) for processing electrical signals generated by the infrared sensor (42) and producing output signals. The cover (44) also has a lens array (36) located across the aperture (46). The electronic passive infrared detector subassembly (43) is located with respect to the cover (44) such that the infrared sensor (42) is aligned with the lens array (36) when the cover (44) is mounted to the junction box (10) such that the infrared sensor (42) detects infrared energy passed through the lens array (36) from a field of view defined by the juxtaposition of the lens array (36) and the infrared sensor (42).

    • An apparatus and method of managing a router table that includes inter-router protocol information indexes the routing table to the inter-router protocol information. Such inter-router protocol information may include data identifying the name of protocol itself, or other related information. To that end, the routing information within the routing table first is indexed based upon the inter-routing protocol information to produce indexed routing information. A given routing information request then may be received. The given request requests both routing information from the routing table, and information relating to a given inter-router protocol. The indexed routing information then is accessed to retrieve the information requested in the request.

    • A cable cutting device having one handle of the cutter placed parallel and closely adjacent to the cable which is to undergo cutting. When a cable is about to be cut, the cable and the handle of the cutter are placed in a side by side relationship and both the cable and handle of the cutter are grasped by the user. The remaining handle is attached to a ratchet mechanism in the cutter and is oscillated to drive the cutter by means of a ratchet device to cut the cable which is still being grasped by the user. Now, the severed cable may be suitably disposed of in a controlled and safe manner. If the user is a utility lineman, the safety associated with the above operation cannot be overemphasized.

    • This invention relates to a vehicle brake lighting system having a novel brake delay lighting system utilized with a conventional vehicle brake lighting system. The conventional vehicle brake lighting system includes a battery member being a power source connected through a brake pedal switch to brake light members. Depression of a brake pedal closes the brake pedal switch to energize the brake light members in a conventional manner. The brake delay lighting system includes a delay timer member which is interconnected by a timer circuit means to the conventional vehicle brake lighting system. The delay timer member is operable on release of contact with the brake pedal and opening of the brake pedal switch to provide for the continued illumination of the brake light members for a set time period such as plus or minus eight seconds. The brake delay lighting system is provided with a fail-safe system so that the conventional vehicle brake lighting system continues to operate in a normal conventional manner even on mechanical or electrical failure of the brake delay lighting system. The brake delay lighting system automatically resets to zero if the brake pedal is depressed during a timing cycle and again times out after release of the brake pedal for the full time cycle.

    • Pig-iron is refined into steel by blowing oxygen and a protective screen of an encasing gas through injecting means located at or near the bottom of a converter containing a melt of molten metal. The encasing gas while protecting the injecting means, allows it to be consumed at substantially the same rate as the bottom of the converter so that the injecting means is not left projecting from the bottom of the converter. The encasing gas can be one which is inert to the melt or the metal of the injecting means or both, or it can be a gas which reacts sluggishly with the melt or the material of the oxygen feed pipe or both. Desirably, the oxygen jet is circular in cross-section and the encasing gas is in the form of a concentric jet.A converter for carrying out the method is made up of a pear-shaped sheet-steel casing having a refractory lining and an inserted bottom provided with nozzles in the form of metal tubes for the oxygen and encasing gas. Preferably, a substantial portion (for example about half) of the converter bottom is free of nozzles. The nozzles can be arranged in groups and there can be rows running parallel with the tilting axis of the converter. The nozzles may also be arranged to cause circulation of the molten metal in the converter. The nozzles can be constructed to provide for swirling movement of the encasing gas. Examples of encasing gas which may be used are hydrogen, nitrogen, noble-gases, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen-fluoride, furnace-mouth gas, coke-oven gas, natural gas and other gases containing hydrocarbons.
