    • Heterodyne-based optical spectrum analysis involves filtering a heterodyne beat signal with at least one matched filter in order to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and the spectral resolution of the heterodyne-based optical spectrum analysis. In an embodiment, an input signal is combined with a swept local oscillator signal in an optical coupler. The combined optical signal is output to a receiver and a heterodyne beat signal is detected. The heterodyne beat signal is filtered by a matched filter unit and the filtered heterodyne beat signal is utilized to generate an output signal that is indicative of an optical parameter of the input signal. By utilizing the quadratic phase behavior of the heterodyne beat signal in signal processing, the resolution of a heterodyne-based OSA can be substantially improved over known heterodyne-based OSAs.

    • A fiber optic gyroscope having at least one forty-five degree splice connected to a polarization maintaining sensing coil. The splice is an alignment of forty-five or so degrees between a major axis of a state of polarization of light or an axis of birefringence at a port of a splitter/combiner, which may be an IOC or a coupler, and an axis of birefringence at an end of a fiber of a fiber optic coil loop. The gyroscope is rendered significantly more insensitive to ambient magnetic fields which cause non-rotation errors in the gyroscope's indication of rotation of its sensing loop or coil. The polarization amplitude errors of the present depolarized gyroscope are no greater than those of a similar but non-depolarized gyroscope. The present gyroscope may use an integrated optic circuit or an optical fiber coupler for splitting the light into two beams that counterpropagate in the sensing coil, for combining the beams when they exit the sensing coil. Two forty-five degree splices are placed at each end of the coil thereby resulting in depolarized light beams in the coil. The gyroscope may be either an open loop or a closed loop configuration.

    • A method for characterizing a device under test includes propagating multiple optical signals through the device under test and combining the multiple optical signals with a reference optical signal. The multiple optical signals are mixed with the reference optical signal and a relative perturbation between the multiple optical signals from the mixing of the multiple optical signals with the reference optical signal is determined. In another embodiment a modulated optical signal is provided from a local oscillator and the modulated optical signal is combined with the input optical signal. The modulated optical signal is mixed with the input signal to provide a mixed signal and at least one polarization-resolved parameter of the input optical signal is extracted from the mixed signal.

    • An optical analyzer and method for measuring optical properties of optical signals utilizes a heterodyne architecture to measure spectral amplitude and phase of a periodically modulated input optical signal, such as an optical signal from a periodically modulated distributed feedback (DFB) laser. The spectral amplitude and phase measurements are derived from a heterodyne signal, which is produced by combining and mixing the input optical signal and a local oscillator (LO) signal. The optical spectrum that is reconstructed from the heterodyne signal includes “inner” spectral peaks that contain phase information of the input optical signal. The inner spectral peaks may be produced by an optical or electrical mixing technique. The spectral phase of the input optical signal is recovered from the inner spectral peaks of the reconstructed optical spectrum.
