    • Test instruments constituting an automatic test system are characterized in terms of execution time data. The execution time data is composed of a set of execution times. Each of the execution times is the time required for the test instrument to perform a respective testing operation. The test instruments additionally have the ability to communicate their respective execution time data to such recipients as others of the test instruments, the system controller and recipients outside the automatic test system. Additionally, such test instruments have the ability to communicate test results to at least one other of the test instruments and the ability to process test results received from at least one other of the test instruments. Such characterization, communication and processing allows a system integrator to devise execution time-dependent test programs as part of a test suite that allows test throughput to be maximized.

    • A system for characterizing optical properties of a device under test (DUT) uses an expanded local oscillator signal to perform multiple parallel interferometric measurements. In one system, the expanded local oscillator signal is optically connected to a lens array. The lens array focuses the expanded swept local oscillator signal into multiple beams. The multiple beams are then used in multiple parallel interferometric measurements. The multiple beams may be used as the reference beams or applied to the DUT and used as the test beams depending on the application. The test beams and reference beams are combined to perform the interferometric measurements. In another system, a portion of the expanded local oscillator signal is applied directly to a DUT as the test beam while another portion of the expanded local oscillator signal is used for the reference beam.

    • An optical heterodyne detection system includes an input signal and a local oscillator signal that are combined in an optical coupler and output as a first beam and a second beam. A polarizing beam splitter is optically connected to the optical coupler in order to receive the first beam and the second beam. The polarizing beam splitter includes four outputs for outputting four beams to four photodetectors including two polarized portions of the first beam and two polarized portions of the second beam. The four photodetectors generate four electrical signals in response to respective ones of the four beams. The four electrical signals are transmitted to a processor and processed to provide an output response that is independent of the polarization state of the original input signal and in which the intensity noise has been suppressed. Processing of the electrical signals to suppress the intensity noise involves canceling the intensity noise component of similarly polarized beams by subtracting the similarly polarized beams. Processing of the electrical signals to provide polarization independence involves squaring the values generated from the two subtraction operations, low pass filtering the values generated from the two squaring operations, and then adding the values generated from the two filtering operations.
