    • A service request system for a subsystem of a computer including a processor, a driver, and inhibit logic. The inhibit logic detects requests for service by the subsystem and asserts an interrupt unless the driver is executing and servicing the subsystem. The driver is executed by the processor in response to the interrupt to service the subsystem, where the driver controls the inhibit logic to prevent interrupts associated with the subsystem from being asserted while the driver is being executed by the processor. In this manner, redundant interrupts or service requests initiated by the subsystem are eliminated. The service request system may include an activity indicator that indicates whether the driver is being executed. Th inhibit logic asserts an interrupt in response to a service request from the subsystem unless the activity indicator indicates that the driver is in control of the processor. The subsystem may further detect the activity indicator and inhibit requesting service while the activity indicator indicates that the driver is active. In this manner, the subsystem avoids wasting time associated with requesting service. Also, the subsystem may be operated in a more streamlined mode while the driver is in control of the processor. In one embodiment, the activity indicator is a logic bit, where the driver changes the state of the logic bit upon execution to a first state and changes the state of the logic bit to a second state upon exiting.

    • A computer system for communicating with a network including a host processor, memory, an interface bus and a network interface device for reducing data transfer latency between the computer system and the network. The network interface device includes a buffer for temporarily storing data, a media interface device for transferring data between the buffer and the network, a bus interface for transferring data between the computer system's memory and the buffer, and a local processor for writing a unique value at a predetermined location within the buffer, for periodically comparing the data value at the predetermined location with the unique value and for initiating data transfer from the buffer to the computer's memory when the data value does not match the unique value. The network interface device is preferably a network interface card (NIC) for plugging into a slot of the interface or expansion bus of the computer system. The local processor writes the unique value at the location and then periodically compares the data at that location with the unique value. When the data value is different from the unique value, the local processor has detected new data in that block of memory. The local processor respondingly initiates data transfer of the new data from that block to the memory of the computer system.

    • A computer system is provided including a processor and a parallel port configured to transfer data to or from a peripheral device. The parallel port includes a data buffer for receiving data transferred on a system bus when the processor executes a write cycle to the parallel port. A control unit associated with the parallel port decodes the address signals of the system bus to selectively latch data within the data buffer, and generates handshake signals to the peripheral device to indicate that write data is presently contained within the data buffer. The peripheral device consequently receives the data and provides an acknowledge signal to the control unit. The control unit thereafter generates a ready signal to indicate to the processor that the data has been written into the peripheral device. A time-out counter is coupled to the control unit to determine whether the peripheral device has returned the acknowledge signal within a predetermined time-out period after the control unit asserts the handshake signal to the peripheral device indicating that data is available at the parallel port. If the time-out period expires and the peripheral device did not return an acknowledge signal, the control unit releases the processor from the current cycle by asserting the ready signal on the system bus. The control unit further asserts an error flag within a status register to indicate that a failure occurred. In response to assertion of the error flag, the control unit asserts an interrupt signal which effectively alerts the processor of a failure. The processor thereafter executes code from an interrupt service routine during which the status register may be read to determine that the failure was associated with the parallel port. The parallel port is also associated with a configuration register that controls whether a non-maskable interrupt or a parallel port interrupt is asserted in response to the assertion of the error flag.

    • A method and apparatus for powering up an integrated circuit (IC). An IC includes a plurality of power domains each coupled to receive power from one of a plurality of power sources. Each power domain includes a power-sensing unit. A power-sensing unit in a first one of the plurality of power domains is coupled to receive a first power ok signal from an upstream power domain, and is configured to assert a second power ok signal to be provided to a second power domain. A power-sensing unit in the second power domain is coupled to detect the presence of voltage in the first power domain, and to receive the first power ok signal. When the power-sensing unit in the second power domain has both sensed the presence of power in the first power domain and received the second power ok signal, a third power ok signal is asserted.

    • A dynamic early indication system for a computer includes a processor subsystem logic that performs a subsystem function, an early indicator, indication logic, and a driver that is executed by the processor in response to an indication to perform processing. The indication logic may be coupled to the subsystem logic and early indicator to provide an indication that informs the processor when processing associated with the subsystem function is needed at a completion time of the subsystem function. The indication may be provided before the completion time of the subsystem function if the early indicator represents early indication. The driver controls the early indicator to improve efficiency of subsystem processing.
