    • A gas compressor is provided comprising a chamber (9) to contain gas to be compressed, a piston (12) and the chamber (9) and an apparatus to drive the piston into the chamber (9) to compress the gas. The compressor also comprises another apparatus (5) to form a spray of liquid in the chamber (9) to cool the gas on compression therein, so that the gas may be compressed approximately isothermally. Valve (17) are provided to allow compressed gas to be drawn from the chamber. The apparatus to drive the piston (12) comprises another apparatus to deliver driving energy stored in the fluid directly to the piston. In one embodiment, the driving energy is provided by a combustible fuel. The heat of compression is rejected at the lowest temperatures and the hot exhaust gas from the combustion process may be used to preheat the isothermally compressed gas.

    • The installation comprises a compression unit and a power unit. The compression unit comprises at least one engine operation according to a Diesel cycle and supercharged by a turbine having an expansion turbine supplied with the exhaust gases of the engine and rotary compressor taking air from the atmosphere through a filter. The compressor delivers a primary supercharging flow to the Diesel cylinders via a cooler. The Diesel engine drives two compressors supplied with atmospheric air through the filter. One of the compressors provides a secondary flow to the power unit. The power unit comprises a combustion chamber which is supplied through the exchanger with part at least of the secondary airflow from the compression unit. The combustion chamber feeds a turbine producing on its shaft the whole of the output power. The Diesel type engine may be a conventional crank type engine or a free piston engine.

    • A fluid driven turbine having a stator member and a turbine member rotatable on an axis and supporting turbine blades and with a fluid compression section is described. The fluid compression section is provided along the axis of rotation of and inside the turbine member by providing: (1) a tubular extension (13 or 102) of the stator member and (2) a rotor means (30 or 104) and at least one rotor blade means (50, 51, 52) moveable perpendicular to the axis on the turbine member which fits inside the tubular member to provide at least two adjacent first and second chambers which are defined by an inside wall of the tubular extension and the rotor means and blade means. The tubular member has a line of minimum eccentricity (12) parallel to the axis with inlet and outlet openings (15, 16) on either side of the line of minimum eccentricity to and from the chambers so that fluid is drawn into the chamber and compressed and then exits from the chambers. The turbine-compressor is useful for instance as a turbocharger, as a drive means for other apparatus and as a refrigeration compressor.

    • A system is disclosed incorporating a positive-displacement compressor-and-engine arrangement for converting heat of a working fluid to attain a pressure increase in a working fluid that is supplied to a turbine system. The system employs a heater interposed to pass exhaust fluid from the drive engine to the turbine system at an elevated temperature. As disclosed, the housing of the compressor-and-drive structure incorporates cooling apparatus, for example so that the reciprocating compressor may approach isothermal operation. Also, the turbine system is divided into one unit which supplies mechanical output power and another to drive a rotary compressor or supercharger, which supplies intake fluid to the positive-displacement compressor, the output of which supplies the positive-displacement engine.
