    • A drawing device 4 is mounted in a drawing shaft 3, and pipe replacement device A connected with new pipes is arranged on the side of starting shaft 2, wherein the drawing device 4 and the pipe replacement device A is connected through pull-rods 5 inserted into existing pipes with each other. The pipe replacement device A is comprised of a cutting part 11 including cutter bodies 14 (shanks 14a to 14i) arranged in the axial direction and at angular intervals in the circumferential direction, an expanding part 12 having expanding rollers 18a to 18f, and a connecting part 13. Each cutter body 14 has a plurality of cutting edges, wherein distances between the respective cutting edges and the center of the circle become larger in order from the forward side toward the backward side. While the pipe replacement device A is traveled in the inside of cast iron pipes, the inner wall of cast iron pipes is cut by the cutter bodies 14 to form grooves. Splitting of existing pipes into arc-shaped pieces 1a is made starting from the grooves. Arc-shaped pieces 1a are pressed into the ground, by which a tunnel 7 surrounded by arc-shaped pieces 1a and portions of consolidated earth is formed, while new pipes 6 are introduced into the tunnel 7, and besides the new pipes 6 are protected by protective armors formed of arc-shaped pieces 1a.

    • A method and an apparatus for new installation or bursting and replacement of underground pipelines, without the necessity of trenches. This method and apparatus allows for the installation without the need for large excavations at the end point of the line and allows for nondestructive termination at an existing vault, structure or manhole without having to rebuild the structure, vault or manhole. The apparatus includes a head assembly that breaks apart fracturable pipe and expands the hole to accommodate the desired size of pipe. Because of the method of applying forces, the expansion of pipe diameter can be very substantial. Because of the head assembly, the head can be disassembled as the pipe and head enter a manhole, vault, structure or limited space and thus no need to excavate the vault or structure or create a large end excavation is necessary, thus saving time and money and avoiding disruption of traffic in street locations.

    • A method of replacing an existing underground pipe (44) with a new pipe (48) comprises the steps of moving a pipe removing tool (70) along the existing pipe (44) to remove the existing pipe and dragging the new pipe (48) behind the tool (70) to replace the existing pipe while imparting vibratory motion to the tool (70) or continuously applying a dressing material ahead of the new pipe to act as lubricant or to fill in the annular space between the new pipe and the surrounding soil. According to another embodiment, the method comprises the steps of pushing out the old pipe (126) in one direction by means of a pipe removing tool (110) connected to a hydraulic unit (10) through a stem and replacing the old pipe (126) by means of a new pipe (48) by dragging the new pipe along behind the stem moving in the opposite direction during a return run. Pipe removing tools (70, 110) are further provided which are capable either of fracturing the old pipe or extracting the old pipe and having chambers (86) for feeding a lubricating or filter material or provided with a vibrator (105) therein. A hydraulic unit (10) for driving the pipe removing tools is also provided which is associated with apparatus (40) for gripping and rotating the stem to effect assembly or disassembly of the stem from individual screw-threaded pipe sections (38).
