    • Methods are disclosed for testing cable pairs in a telecommunications network. One method connects a test line to a telecommunications switch. The test line is connected to an inactive cable pair. The inactive cable pair has no telecommunications service established for the cable pair. The connection between the test line and the inactive cable pair creates a signal path from the telecommunications switch to the inactive cable pair, thus allowing the inactive cable pair to be tested for faults. This method allows a telecommunications service provider to determine the condition of available, inactive cable pairs.

    • A method for performing automated UNE migration comprising receiving a disconnect order for an existing telephone service and receiving a connect order for a new telephone service. The existing telephone service is provided by a first exchange carrier and the new telephone service is provided by a second exchange carrier. A test cable is installed to simulate the new telephone service. The method further comprises verifying that the test cable performs correctly. The verifying includes executing a test on the test cable responsive to a test instruction from a migration software application. The existing telephone service is deactivated, where the deactivating is automated in response to a deactivation command from the migration software application and is responsive to said verifying. The test cable is activated to provide the new telephone service, where the activating is automated in response to an activation command from the migration software application and in response to the deactivating.

    • A modular test instrument comprises a base unit and one of a selection of application modules, neither being capable of performing end-user functions without the other. When physically assembled to one another, the base unit and application module comprise a structurally unitary device specialized for performance of application-specific end-user functions. The base unit is generic to all types of test to be provided, and comprises a display, a power supply, a user interface, and generic software to operate the display and user interface. Each application module is connected to the base unit in the same manner, so that the same base unit can be employed with a wide variety of application modules. The application modules can be readily and conveniently removed from and assembled to the base unit. The application-specific application modules each include a physical interface for establishing signal-communicating connection to the equipment to be tested, and application-specific program data and software, including information required to provide appropriate test signals, test messages, and the like. Each application module also stores user interface software for providing an application-specific user interface. When an application module is assembled to a base unit, polling software comprised by the base unit determines the identity of the application module, and determines whether it stores any software or other program data not previously copied to the base unit's memory; if not, the copying step is begun automatically upon assembly.

    • A method for automatically tracing an interface for an exchange and a subscriber network, includes setting an operator, reference, a procedure for notifying an event are defined, so that a user could perform interface tracing for an exchange and a subscriber network using a network management system such as EMS. The method for automatically tracing a subscriber applied to a communication system, includes: receiving setting particulars from an operator in order to perform tracing of a subscriber with respect to an interface for LE (Local Exchange) and a subscriber network (AN: Access network); checking setting particulars of the operator by receiving trace request for the interface from the operator, performing tracing relevant to the setting particulars, providing tracing results to the operator; and providing information for an event so that the operator could check the information upon occurrence of a trace event at an interface relevant to the setting particulars of the operator. Therefore, all the systems having, in their inside, an interface protocol for an exchange and a subscriber network, such as a V5.2 protocol, could perform cause tracking upon generation of problems in a more easy and convenient manner when problems are generated upon matching due to characteristics of each AN or an LE and a system vendor.
