    • Mounting arrangements for roller-type earth cutters, used in continuous boring or tunneling machine, which prevent an excessive loading of a cutter. In one embodiment, spring-type means urge the cutters outwardly from a support and thrust surface, such as a cutterhead, and yields under a predetermined load to allow inward movement of the cutter to prevent overloading thereof. In another embodiment, hydraulic-fluidpressure-powered plungers, manifolded together from a common source of fluid pressure, urge cutters against the work face, and excessive loading of any one cutter displaces some of its plunger fluid to other cutter plungers whereby the loading is substantially averaged for all cutters.

    • A replaceable wear-resistant element assembly is described having a wear-resistant element and a mounting device for releasably securing the element in the recess of a supporting body. The mounting device is constructed of a one-piece goblet shaped unit having a sleeve portion for receiving the element therein and a stem portion for supporting the element. The stem and sleeve portions are interconnected by a shearable web portion which will fracture when an axial force of sufficient magnitude is applied to the sleeve to cause the sleeve to move downward about the stem to release the element.

    • A cutter tool for an earth-boring machine comprises a disc or ring of a metal or alloy having a Rockwell C hardness of at least 60 and having a circumferential cutting edge on its outside surface. The inner surface of the ring, or of a steel liner on which the hard metal ring is mounted, has a tapered crosssectional configuration. A first annular support engages one of the inner tapered surfaces and a second annular support the other tapered surface. These annular supports may be drawn toward each other to exert a hoop stress on the hard metal ring thereby placing it in a prestressed condition. The hard metal ring, its optional steel liner and the supports constitute an assembly which is rotatably mounted on a shaft. The shaft includes means for attachment to an earth-boring machine with the shaft in axial alignment with a radius of the bore.
