    • A construction is provided in the form of a roof or a wall or the like which includes a plurality of parallel panels connected in series. These panels include juxtaposed edge portions and are formed of cores provided with skins which extend along the cores and beyond the same to form interlocking members to connect the parallel panels together. Some of the interlocking members may be in the form of ramps which are resiliently supported. The interlocking members which engage therewith are in the form of hook-shaped members which ride up the ramps and beyond the same. The interlocking members which are formed as ramps define a rectilinearily shaped receptacle for receiving the core of the next adjacent panel. The received core extends into the receptacle short of the core associated therewith. The interlocking members bear upon one another and selective of the associated cores in order to enhance the load bearing characteristics of the construction. Some of the interlocking members also form fluid evacuating passages extending longitudinally along the panels. A gutter arrangement can be provided at the extremities of the panels in order to receive and drain away fluid received from the aforesaid passages. The received core can be formed with a tongue which may be integral with the associated core or separate from but cemented thereto. The tongue can be chamfered to permit tilting of the panels when they are brought together. Alternatively, the panels can be brought directly together in edge-to-edge direction or can be connected by relative longitudinal displacements.

    • A panel which has a central insulating core, usually expanded polystyrene or equivalent material, which core is flanked on one side by a skin laminated to the core, and on the other side by a composite skin such as oriented strand board (OSB) or plywood such as five eighth plywood sheets is disclosed. The oriented strand board is more desirable because of its structure and more importantly its availability in lengths up to forty feet. The joint at the lateral edges is comparable to that of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 513,922 filed Apr. 24, 1990. On one side where there is a protrusion and an interlock with a groove. An extension and recess are provided but the same have a different configuration inasmuch as one has the board substrate is its side portion. In addition, a joiner is provided so that with an overlapping portion of the composite skin on the adjacent laterally disposed panel they will overlap at the middle of the joiner. Since the joiner is secured underneath its overlapping composite skin, simple stapling of the other forms a very tight joint and strengthens when used as a roof. Similarly as a wall, when the OSB or plywood portion is interior, the joint can be strengthened. Another aspect of the invention looks to the provision of a shear rail of the same or equivalent material as the composite skin which is positioned at a mid-station and optionally supplemented by another shear rail at another location in the panel. The shear rails run the length of the panel. This creates an I-beam like effect and permits the panel of a given core thickness to span significantly greater unsupported distances. It also provides for framing a drop in the skylight between parallel rails. The method of the invention looks to the assembly of panels of the type just described into roofs, walls, and building systems.

    • Roofing systems are herein disclosed which lend themselves to simplified installation techniques and provide enhanced energy conservation over conventional roofing systems of comparable appearance. The system of this invention is based, in substantial part, upon the use of a large (typically 4'.times.8') panel of cellular structural foam as a replacement for ceramic and/or cast concrete roofing tiles ("Barrel" and "Bermuda" style tiles). In the preferred embodiments of this invention, a closed cell structural formed panel is molded or cut to simulate an array of roofing tiles. The simulated foam tile panel is further provided with a refractory (fireproofing) finish, such as stucco, or its equivalent. A finish coating is, thereafter, applied to the refractory coating to enhance water repellency and, thus, serve to further weatherproof the roofing panel. The finishing coating can be applied prior to or subsequent to installation of the foam tile panels. In one of the preferred embodiments of this invention the foam tile panel is laminated to a 4'.times.8' sheet of plywood or an "OSB" board; or, alternatively, internally structurally enforced. A reinforcing mesh is also preferably provided on the exposed surface of the panel and bonded thereto upon application of the refractory coating or finish. Structural inserts integral with the foam tile not only enhance its physical integrity and strength but also provide a means for attachment of the foam tile panel to the roof trusses.
