    • The present vehicle speed bump device allows a vehicle to roll over the device slowly with little resistance. However, the device includes a lock which operates to lock the speed bump of the device in operative position when contacted by a vehicle wheel moving at a higher speed, thereby causing an appreciable bump effect. The device includes a frame having a transverse bump bar at its upper end and a counterweight bar at its lower end. The frame is rotatably mounted by transverse axles secured to opposite sides of an open-topped container. In the resting position, the bump bar projects up above the open top. A lock arm projects rearwardly from and is rigidly interconnected to the frame for rotation therewith. It bears a vertical pendulum arm which rotates forwardly and rearwardly and which has a friction block at its lower end. A second friction block is mounted in the container below and to the rear of the first friction block. The two blocks contact and lock together to prevent continued rotation of the frame only when the bump bar is struck with sufficient force by a fast traveling vehicle wheel to swing the first friction block into the second block as the frame rotates. As a result the bump bar remains up above the container to transmit a large bump to the vehicle, the frame being locked in place.

    • An electrically controlled safety mechanism for a highway exit ramp for detecting vehicle movement in the wrong direction, including a series of electrically controlled detection devices provided within the roadway, a warning member and support housing for the mechanism located adjacent to the roadway, and some distance beyond the road bed located detection devices, the warning member of the housing being pivotally mounted with respect to its base and capable of disposition in a nonoperative vertical position, but pivotal into a horizontal position when the detection devices sense the presence of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction, a motor, brake, and speed reducer associated with the housing, for operation of the warning member, and for initiating its pivotal movements, the circuitry of this device including time operative electrical relay and electrical controller relays connected together for providing timed operations to the said motor and related mechanisms, so that the warning member will be conveniently pivoted into its operative and vehicle impeding position when a wrong way vehicle has been detected, and remain in such position for a segment of time, and then returned to its upright position after the hazardous condition has theoretically been alleviated.

    • A traffic flow controller including a barrier coupled to a support for moving between a raised position and a lowered position in response to an automotive vehicle driving over the barrier. The barrier is biased to the raised position, and control means stops the barrier at an intermediate position after each alternate depression of the barrier to the lowered position. Thus, depression of the barrier to the lowered position by the front wheels of an automotive vehicle causes the barrier to rise to the intermediate position, and depression of the barrier to the lowered position by the rear wheels of the vehicle causes the barrier to rise to the fully raised position.
