    • A horizontal stack molding machine having a reciprocating pouring conveyor and an aligned non-powered cooling conveyor, a fixed pattern, a traversing pivot carriage including a projecting open ended flask with a movable pattern therein, a jolt and squeeze ram mechanism in the carriage supporting the movable pattern; a sand blow reservoir for blowing sand into the flask through sealed ports when the flask is clamped against the fixed pattern, the jolt and squeeze mechanism moving the movable pattern toward the fixed pattern to form a chamber of predetermined depth prior to blow and then, following blow, moving further to form a sand cake of predetermined hardness; the flask and movable pattern are then retracted as a unit to draw the cake from the fixed pattern, the carriage then traversing to align the cake with the conveyors, the flask and movable pattern then extending as a unit to index the pouring conveyor and the entire stack a predetermined distance; the pouring conveyor and flask are then retracted together with the pouring conveyor sliding beneath the stacked molds, the movable pattern however maintaining its position to remove the cake from the flask onto the pouring conveyor and when the cake is out of the flask, the movable pattern retracts to draw such pattern from the cake, the flask then retracting and the carriage traversing toward the fixed pattern to form another cake.

    • The shifting of the jackets and weights from the molds on one conveyor system run to a contiguous conveyor system run is performed automatically by a swinging boom mechanism having a vertical lift mechanism on the outer end of the boom. An open clamp means attached to the lower end of the lift rod closes the clamp on the jacket and accompanying weight of a mold in which the molten metal has solidified. The closed clamp and its load is lifted clear of the mold, swung on the supporting post through an angle to an aligned position over a fresh mold approaching the metal pouring station, after which the jacket and weight, held in the clamp assembly, is lowered over the green mold, set or snugged down on the mold, and the clamp is then opened, raised, swung back over the first conveyor run, and the cycle repeated. The operation is synchronous with the step-by-step movement of the mold pallets on the conveyor.

    • An automatic molding plant and operational method having a plurality of traverse carts or bogies to convey box molds. The molds are transferred from a sidetrack at a loading station and are ready for casting, then to a casting station or train and from there to an unloading station by way of a cooling track comprising at least two conveying paths positioned in different horizontal planes. Liftable and/or lowerable end sections are provided at the ends of the conveying paths, and the sidetrack is connected with one conveying path through the loading and unloading stations. Transferable weighting members are placed in the box molds in front of the casting station and are conveyed from the unloading station to the loading station on the traverse carts. After part of the cooling track has been traversed, the mold packs are separated from the box molds, and the box molds are returned to the molding machine while the mold pack traverses the remainder of the cooling track in an undamaged manner.

The mold is accessible for removal from the system at any stage of completion by direction of a computer control system.

The entry and exit flash shuttles respectively operate positively to locate and transfer along the conveyor one flask of cope and drag flask sets out of and into alignment with a flask separate/set-on and flask take-off/close to permit set-on and take-off of the other flask at high production rates. The flask separate/set-on and flask take-off/close each includes cope and drag flask lift arms which are provided with respective opposed guides that cooperate with specially constructed cope and drag flasks precisely to locate the flasks in the lift arms during flask separate/set-on and take-off/close operations. The foundry molding system also is characterized by relatively short entry and exit mold transfer conveyors strategically interposed between entry and exit ends of the molding line conveyor and respective portions of a cooling conveyor, respectively.
