    • A full face fabricated sheet metal wheel having a rim with dual bead seats and inboard flange and a disc welded to the outboard edge of the rim and providing an outboard tire bead retaining flange with a curl rolled to finish profile without machining. Method and apparatus for making such wheel includes a roll forming machine with modified roll forming tooling and workpiece clamping mechanism so as to rotatably spring clamp and rotationally drivingly support a wheel workpiece in the machine roll forming station on axially opposed outboard and inboard power driven lower rolls during roll forming the flange curl profile. An upper outboard roll operates to first clamp a flange pre-cursor portion of the workpiece to securely stabilize and prevent tilting of the workpiece on the lower clamping support rolls and then by further successive roll forming engagement cause cold flow of the flange metal to thin and iron the flange curl to finished profile. Flange curl outside diameter is controllable by adjusting angular orientation of the workpiece rotational axis relative to the roll rotational axes, as by controlling relative diameters of the support rolls and/or relative elevations of the rotational axes of the lower rolls. " Full face" clamping of the workpiece by the opposed inner rolls further supports the workpiece against tilting forces during initial roll forming as well as during edge conditioning roll forming performed concurrently in the roll forming station.

    • A method of forming wheels such as automobile wheels that consist of a disc part and a peripheral rim part. The wheel's disc part is formed by forging. Then the rim part is shaped by rolling. An initial material is formed beforehand so as to combine a central disc part and a peripheral annular part. One ram has a pressing surface for shaping an outer side of the disc part and a peripheral surface for shaping an outer rim. The other ram has a pressing surface for shaping an inner side of the disc part and a peripheral surface for shaping an inner rim. The rams rotate on their axes synchronously in the same direction and press the central disc part for shaping the disc part of the wheel. At the same time or afterward a shaping roller forms a rim part by pressing the peripheral part from the side.

    • An improved method for producing a full face fabricated vehicle wheel is disclosed, wherein a full face disc is formed by combining stamping and flow spinning operations. The method includes the steps of: (a) providing a generally circular rim defining an axis and including a generally axially extending well and a pair of opposed ends, one of the ends including an inboard tire bead seat retaining flange and an inboard tire bead seat, and the other end including an outboard tire bead seat; (b) providing a generally circular disc blank including an inner annular portion defining a wheel mounting surface; (c) stamping the disc blank to form an intermediate annular portion having a predetermined contour and an outer annular portion; (d) flow spinning the outer annular portion of the disc to form an outboard tire bead seat retaining flange of the full face wheel; (e) positioning the outboard tire bead seat retaining flange of the disc adjacent the outboard tire bead seat of the rim; and (f) securing the rim and disc together to produce the full face fabricated wheel.

The top roll exchanging apparatus includes a movable bearing device for supporting a top roll shaft and a top roll loading/unloading arm provided on an extension of the top roll shaft. The movable bearing device is movable between an engaging position wherein the movable bearing device rotatably supports the top roll shaft and a waiting position wherein the movable bearing device is spaced from the extension of the top roll shaft. The top roll loading/unloading arm is movable toward and away from the top roll shaft and is rotatable about a mid-portion thereof. A top roll is exchanged by removing the movable bearing device from the engaging position, moving the top roll loading/unloading arm to load and unload top rolls and finally returning the movable bearing device to its original position.

    • The method for producing an aluminum wheel rim comprises axially pressing a thin walled cylindrical aluminum or aluminum alloy material under the action of compressive stress acting thereon through tapered portions of a die and a punch cooperating therewith in a press machine so that the diameter of the material is enlarged so as to form the required configuration of the rim, while the wall thickness of the material is increased at positions where compressive stress is applied through the tapered portions of the die and the punch thereby increasing the mechanical strength of the material at positions where otherwise weakening tends to occur due to the thinning of the wall thickness of the material by the roll working thereof. In order to successfully carry out the method, it is preferred to select the ratio H/D of the height H of the material with respect to the inner diameter D thereof to be equal to or less than 1.5, the ratio t/D of the wall thickness t of the material with respect to the inner diameter D to be in the range of 0.006 to 0.06 and the mean deformation resistance or mean flow stress of the material to be in the range of 10 to 25 kg/mm.sup.2, while the inclination angle of the tapered portions of the die and the punch is set to be in the range of 10.degree. to 65.degree..
