    • A device for quantitively collecting, preserving and mailing a fresh and wet specimen of fecal or other biological matter for later analysis comprises a tubular vessel defining a chamber closed at one axial end by a plug and restricted at the opposite end by a narrow aperture. A stopper for closing the open end of the vessel extends into a stick whose distal portion comprises indentations capable of retaining a portion of the biological matter when the stick is dipped into it. The distal portion of the stick is shaped and dimensioned to intimately and circumferentially contact the edge of the aperture so that the amount of matter introduced into the chamber is limited to the part having penetrated into the indentations. The shank of the stick is dimensioned to seal the aperture once the stopper has been screwed upon the open end of the vessel. The plug mounts a breakable hollow nib and is installed after introduction into the chamber of a metered volume of preserving solution. A cover caps the plug and nib to provide additional sealing of that end of the vessel during transportation.

    • The invention described herein relates to an improved biopsy needle which enhances the accuracy of the sampling procedure and minimizes the trauma caused by the procedure. The biopsy needle comprises a tip that reduces or minimizes undesirable bias of the needle during sampling penetration of the tissue, the tip comprising a plurality of facets arranged and oriented in a manner which improves the interaction between the needle and tissue during its advancement and penetration therein thereby improving the performance of the biopsy needle. The invention also includes a biopsy device comprising the biopsy needle of the invention.

    • A biopsy device includes a flexible distal portion for obtaining a biopsy sample from a biopsy site. The device includes a coring cannula with a wall defined between a proximal end and a distal end and defining a lumen therebetween. The wall of the cannula defines a coring relief notch adjacent the distal end has a length along a longitudinal axis of the cannula longer than a diameter of the coring cannula. A wire is slidably disposable within the lumen of the coring cannula and has a proximal end and a distal end and defines a sampling cavity adjacent the distal end. A wire relief notch is positioned adjacent the sampling cavity. The wire relief notch has a length along a longitudinal axis of the wire longer than a width of the wire relief notch. A firing mechanism is engaged to the proximal ends of the coring cannula and the wire and the firing mechanism is operable to move the coring cannula relative to the wire from a second position to a first position to trap tissue from the biopsy site in the sampling cavity. The wire is slidable relative to the coring cannula between the first position retracted within the lumen so that the coring cannula covers the sampling cavity and a second position wherein the distal end of the wire is extended away from the coring cannula to expose the cavity to tissue in the biopsy site.

    • A method and apparatus for obtaining esophageal cells for diagnostic purposes comprises inserting the distal end of a flexible support body in a patient's stomach via the esophagus and mouth so that the proximal support body end projects from the mouth. A balloon at the distal support body end is inflated and the support body is withdrawn until the inflated balloon engages the sphincter at the stomach entrance. A support body location is marked that is a predetermined distance from the patient's dental arch when the inflated balloon engages the sphincter at the stomach entrance. The balloon is deflated and the support body is withdrawn so that the marked locatin is adjacent the patient's dental arch. The support body is withdrawn a second predetermined distance and a second support body location, adjacent the patient's dental arch, is marked. A cell collecting element is deployed from within the distal end of the support body so that the cell collecting element is disposed in the esophagus within the predetermined distance from the sphincter. The support body is reciprocated through the second predetermined distance with the cell collecting element deployed so that cells from the esophagus within the second predetermined distance from the sphincter are deposited on the cell collecting element. The cell collecting element is retracted into the body so that it does not engage the esophagus wall, and the body is withdrawn from the patient.

    • This invention is an improved tissue-localizing device with an electrically energized locator element for fixedly yet removably marking a volume of tissue containing a suspect region for excision. The electrical energizing of the locator element facilitates the penetration of the locator element in to subject's tissue and minimizes resistance due to dense or calcified tissues. At least one locator element is deployed into tissue and assumes a predetermined curvilinear shape to define a tissue border containing a suspect tissue region along a path. Multiple locator elements may be deployed to further define the tissue volume along additional paths defining the tissue volume border that do not penetrate the volume. Delivery of electric current may be achieved through monopolar or bipolar electronic configuration depending on design needs. Various energy sources, e.g. radio frequency, microwave or ultrasound, may be implemented in this energized tissue-localizing device.
