    • An image processing device and method to select a field to use in interpolation, if an input image is a film image. The image processing device includes a field selector to select a field to use to interpolate a current field based on difference values in field data among first, second, and third fields being consecutively input in an input image, the field to use to interpolate the current image being one of the first and the third fields and the current field being the second field, a film detector to generate a pattern based on the difference values in the field data between the first, second, and third fields and to determine whether the input image is a film image based on the generated pattern, and an interpolator to interpolate the second field using the one of the first and third field selected by the field selector if the film detector determines the input image to be a film image. Accordingly, when the input image is a film image without a bad-edit, the interpolation process is executed by selecting two temporarily consecutive fields of a field to be interpolated, and using the field with a smaller difference values in field data from the field to be interpolated and a problem of judder in images can be resolved.

    • A method is disclosed for showing motion picture films at a frame rate higher than that in which the films were originally shot. This method uses computer software originally designed to generate cinematic images for a slow-motion effect to produce images for interpolation between each of the discrete images of an existing motion picture. The resulting film contains twice as many images as the film did when originally photographed, with a computer-generated “in between” image placed between each pair of successive images in the original film. These new transitional images simulate the appearance of motion that would have been captured by a camera, if twice as many discrete images had been photographed than actually were photographed in the original production. This method is especially suited to presentation of motion picture films on large theatrical screens. The method disclosed can be used for modification of films, by adding computer-generated images to only certain scenes or sequences of film action. This allows the effect created by this method to be added or removed at the discretion of the user of the method.

    • Luminance of defective pixels is adjusted. A target pixel is selected form the plurality of defective pixels. A normal pixel is searched and detected on each of opposed sides across the target pixel along each of a plurality of search lines extending through the target pixel. There are calculated a first pixel value ratio which is a ratio between a pixel value of one normal pixel located on one side across the target pixel and a pixel value of a further normal pixel located on the other side across the target pixel, a second pixel value ratio which is a ratio between the pixel value of said one normal pixel and a pixel value of the target pixel after the luminance adjustment thereof, and a third pixel value ratio which is a ratio between the pixel value of the further normal pixel and the pixel value of said target pixel after the luminance adjustment thereof. A weight coefficient for each search line is calculated, based on the first, second and third pixel value ratios. An interpolation value for the target pixel is calculated for each search line. Then, a correction value for the target pixel is calculated, based on the weight coefficient for each search line and the interpolation value for the target pixel, and the target pixel is corrected based on the correction value.

    • An image reading device which has a reduced size and which can read images at high quality. LEDs, which are respective pluralities of light emitting diode elements that emit red, green, blue and infrared light, are disposed at an area CCD scanner. A frame image of a photographic film is successively read with light of each wavelength by emitting light from the LED elements. Pixels that are affected by a scratch or dust at the photographic film are detected by the infrared light. Red, green and blue image data for such pixels is corrected by means of interpolation or the like. Thus, images can be read at high quality. Furthermore, because the LEDs are used as a light source instead of a halogen lamp, less heat is emitted, the device is more compact, and cut filters and the like are not needed.

    • A lamp, a film guide, and a photosensitive detector are combined into an optical system contained in a portable device that generates electrical signals representing images recorded on motion picture film. The film guide has a surface proximate to the motion picture with an aperture therein through which light from the lamp passes to image the film on the photosensitive detector. A digital processor, which is electrically connected to the photosensitive detector processes an electronic signal output by the photosensitive detector. To provide compactness, the optical system has a folded path comprising three segments each separately mounted on a different surface. The first segment includes the lamp, the second includes the film guide, and the third includes the photosensitive detector. An optical detector positioned so as to receive light from the lamp enables adjusting the device when the device is moved to a location where the temperature and other environmental conditions change. This configuration also finds use when the device is located in an environment whose temperature remains consistently hot.
