    • Coherence of an optical fiber bundle with randomly different geometries at its two ends is achieved electronically. A photosensitive array such as a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) or a Random Access Memory (RAM) is used as a sensor array to determine the addresses of the fiber at which light exits when light is sequentially directed into each consecutive fiber at the other end. The addresses are stored in a ROM and are used to provide coherence of an otherwise unordered fiber optic bundle having one end formed in a linear array, for example, and used to scan documents. More than one bit map is generated for the array of fibers by utilizing the fact that each fiber overlies a number of sensors of the sensor array. By "exposing" the sensors of each bit map for a different exposure time a pseudo grey scale image is produced with a RAM array and extended grey scale is achieved with a CCD or other analogue imaging array.

    • Disclosed is a method of processing image signals from a first and a second image sensor, both of a document scanner unit, where the first image sensor provides a first image, and the second image sensor provides a second image. The first and the second image are two-dimensional images wherein said first and second image are recorded at respective areas of a scanned medium, where a portion of the respective areas is recorded also by the other of the respective image sensors. Thereby image data from overlapping and non-overlapping areas are present in the first and the second image. The method comprises: correlating the first image with the second image, creating a correlation image and processing the correlation image to determine a displacement between the first and the second image. Consequently, a versatile calibration method is provided that can determine a displacement between the first and the second image in two dimensions.

    • An image reading apparatus includes a light source, an imaging optics system, an image pickup device unit, a memory, and a processor. The imaging optics system condenses scattered light reflected on an object to be imaged to form condensed light as an image. The imaging optics system includes plural cells arranged in a main scanning direction and each of which is an independent imaging optics system. Each of the cells includes a telecentric optics system at the document side. Two rows of cells are arranged in a sub-scanning direction. The cells in the rows are arranged zigzag in the main scanning direction to complement a formed image by the cells in the sub-scanning direction. The image pickup device unit is arranged to correspond to each cell. The processor can form a document image by reconstructing and combining image information stored in the memory into an image.
