    • A control circuit operates a dual directional DC motor from an AC power source. A controller has first and second position indication inputs adapted to receive respective first and second position indications. The controller also has first and second direction outputs, which respectively energize one of two first relay coils having contacts outputting respective AC voltages responsive to the direction outputs. A full wave bridge rectifier receives the AC voltage and responsively outputs a DC voltage, which energizes a second relay coil. A contact thereof directs that voltage to two sets of first relay contacts, which are also responsive to the direction outputs, and which respectively provide a positive or negative DC voltage to the motor. Another second relay coil contact provides a braking action to the motor responsive to removal of the DC voltage from the rectifier output following removal of the AC voltage to the rectifier.

    • The invention relates to an electric circuit breaker that includes at least one mobile contact. The contact is connected to operating means that includes an electric motor (6). Movement converting means (16, 17) are provided for converting rotary movement of the motor (6) to translatory movement for linear movment of the mobile contact. The object is to provide an improved movement conversion means. According to the invention, the movement conversion means includes a first body, such as a screw (17), and a second body, such as a nut (16). The threads of the screw (17) and the nut (16) co-act in engagement with each other. The invention also relates to an electric plant that is equipped with such a circuit breaker, to the use of the breaker for breaking electric current, and to a method of breaking electric current with the aid of the inventive circuit breaker.

    • An installed manual transfer switch is converted into an automatic transfer switch. A conversion assembly is mechanically mounted directly onto the already installed manual transfer switch. A controller is electrically coupled to the conversion assembly and automatically controls movements of the conversion assembly. The controller monitors the power supplies connected to the manual transfer switch and automatically moves the conversion assembly into different positions to change the switching arrangement of the manual transfer switch according to the monitored power supplies. The conversion assembly is mounted to the manual transfer switch without having to electrically disconnect the manual transfer switch from an electrical load center and without having to physically remove the manual transfer switch from an electrical panel box containing the manual transfer switch. To reduce the number of mechanical parts and to increase safety, a single motor operator is used to rotate a cam that controls all mechanical movement of the conversion assembly. To maintain substantially the same width of the panel box, the motor operator is designed to insert in between two circuit breakers in the manual transfer switch. The electrical panel door in the currently installed electrical panel box is replaced with a conversion door that holds the controller that plugs into the conversion assembly.

    • A motor operator is configured to provide local and remote operation of a power line phase switch. The motor operator has its components individually enclosed in a component enclosure and further enclosed in a main enclosure, allowing isolation and protection of the components from the environment and operators. A gear box includes a worm gear reducer submersed in oil providing a no maintenance gear train that makes continuous braking unnecessary by virtue of the inherently self-locking nature of the worm gear. The motor operator also includes a plurality of limit and auxiliary switches providing local and remote indication of switch position. The switches are each independently adjustable using cam adjustment collars. The overall configuration of the motor operator provides safe, reliable and cost effective phase switch operation.

    • A circuit recloser that limits current through a power line when a fault condition occurs. The recloser includes a circuit interrupter that is switchable between a closed state, in which current is permitted to flow through the power line, and an open state, in which the current is interrupted. The interrupter switches to its open state in response to a fault condition, such as a current surge. The recloser also has a movable member that is operatively coupled to the interrupter for resetting the interrupter to the closed state from the open state when the movable member is moved. The movable member is configured for being remotely movable to close the interrupter. Preferably the recloser includes an electric drive to remotely move the movable member from a remote station, and a projection extends from the movable member to enable manual movement thereof. The movable member includes a shaft which the electric drive rotates by turning a slotted hub coaxially about the shaft. When hub rotates, ends of slots in the hub contact a drive pin that extends radially from the shaft. The slots allow manual rotation of the shaft without damaging the electric drive. Microswitches sense the position of the hub during its rotation.

    • An inverter contact switch has a first pair of spaced fixed contacts connected to respective terminals of an inverter circuit for selectively disconnecting and connecting the inverter to a DC power bus. A first pair of spaced movable contacts are positioned on opposite sides of the fixed contacts. A drive actuator is coupled to the movable contacts for concurrently driving the movable contacts into substantially simultaneous engagement with the pair of fixed contacts for establishing a circuit path from one of the fixed contacts through each of the movable contacts to another of the fixed contacts. The switch may include a second pair of fixed and movable contacts operatively connected to a DC return bus and another terminal of the inverter for isolating the inverter from both the power and return buses. The switch also includes flux concentrators positioned adjacent the fixed contacts for concentrating electromagnetic flux generated by current through the closed contacts so as to counteract repulsive forces at the contact interfaces due to very large inverter currents.

    • A powered mechanism displaces the toggle, handle or similar operator of a switch such as a circuit breaker, motor contactor or transfer switch. A linear induction motor drives a motor shaft between extended and retracted positions. A pair of S-shaped cam members pivot at one end on an axis, and a sliding pin carried on the end of the motor shaft rides along slots in the cam members. A couple engages over the switch operator and is pivotally attached to links that in turn are pivotally attached to the cam members, The links attach to the cam members at a point closer to the pivot axis of the cam member than the sliding pin in the slots, thus obtaining leverage. The slots have an inclined or curved section joined to a straight section. The straight section provides an idling action in that no force is applied to the operator via the couple as the sliding pin passes through the straight section, allowing the motor to accelerate unopposed. When the sliding pin is in the inclined or curved section, displacement of the motor shaft moves the couple, and therefore the switch operator handle.

    • A transfer switch mechanism is provided for operating the handles of a pair of circuit interrupters. The transfer switch mechanism has a lever arm movable between advanced and retracted positions, the lever arm having a gripping portion permitting handhold for manual operation. The lever arm turns an axle via a ratchet assembly with pawls that permit the axle to turn in one direction but oppose movement of the axle in the direction counter to that direction. The axle turns a crank, and a pair of connecting rods have proximal ends coupled to the crank. The transfer switch mechanism further includes a pair of handle-engaging heads, each of which has opposed abutment surfaces that removably receive the handle of one or the other circuit interrupters between the opposed abutment surfaces. A base is fixed relative to the circuit interrupters and movably supports the lever arm and the handle-engaging heads. The connecting rods have distal ends respectively coupled to one of the two heads such that operation of the lever arm between the advanced and retracted positions causes the abutment surfaces to drive against the handles and thereby move the handles between operative positions.
