    • The user selects a fadeover duration by selecting the number of pulses in a reference pulse packet registered by a reference counter. During film transport in either direction, a frame-pulse counter counts up a number of frame pulses equal to the number of pulses in the reference pulse packet, and then performs another frame-pulse counting cycle. Each frame-pulse counting cycle advances a program-step counter. Logic circuitry is responsive to the count on the program-step counter and, during the successive program steps, causes fade-out, film-rewind, and fade-in operations to be performed. The adjusting motor for the diaphragm operates at a speed inversely related to the number of pulses in the reference pulse packet, and the amount by which the adjusting motor changes the diaphragm setting during each frame-pulse counting cycle is always the same.

Manipulation of this dial effects control of engagement and disengagement between a film driving gear and a gear train of a time setting member, of an operating member adapted to lock and unlock the rotation of a film winding shaft or drum, of movement of a shutter open angle operating plate, of a switching operation of a film driving motor between forward and reverse directions, and of opening and closing of a switch connected to a reverse rotation circuit. The operating member locks the film winding shaft only against rotation in the overlapping photographing operation, and the switch connected to the reverse rotation circuit is held in an open position in the fading photographing operation of the motion picture camera.

    • A fading mechanism for changing the size of the light-admitting aperture which is furnished by the diaphragm of a motion picture camera during the making of exposures with fade-in or fade-out effect has a control ring which is rotatable in a wall of the camera housing and is normally coupled to a gear of the diaphragm adjusting mechanism so that the user of the camera can adjust the diaphragm by rotating the control ring. A button which is movable axially of the control ring can shift the gear into mesh with a worm wheel which is rotated by the camera motor so that the diaphragm can be adjusted by the motor. The gear is disengaged from the worm wheel in automatic response to completion of a given number of exposures with fade-in or fade-out effect.

    • A motion picture camera automatic fade-in fadeout mechanisms includes a variable-exposure aperture shutter and selectively operable means for closing the aperture with the advance feed of a predetermined length of film while disabling the film takeup. Upon closure of the aperture the drive motor is automatically stopped and then selectively energized in a reverse direction to retract the advanced predetermined length of film and thereafter the motor is energized in an advance direction and the mechanism actuated to open the aperture during the advance of said predetermined length of film an normal photography is then effected. The shutter includes a pair of blades having overlapping openings and being angularly adjustable to vary the area of opening overlap. The aperture-varying mechanism includes a heart-shaped cam advanced 180* to close the the aperture, stop during film retraction and rotated 180* to open the aperture. A drive motor shorting and reversing switch responds to the position of the aperture control mechanism.
