The display device comprises an upper substrate (103), a lower substrate (104), a solvent (102), and ellipsoids (101), and the solvent (102) and the ellipsoids (101) are provided between the upper substrate (103) and the lower substrate (104). The ellipsoids are configured for forming photonic crystals and have electromagnetic characteristics. By means of photonic crystals formed by the ellipsoids having a shape of oval spheres with a size in order of nanometer or sub-micrometer, the display device can change wavelength of reflected light and present different colors, thus color images can be displayed.

摘要： In relation to a polymerizable composition for forming a transparent optical resin layer to be interposed between an image display section of an image display device and a light-transmissive protective section thereof, the present invention provides a polymerizable composition that does not give rise to display defects caused by the deformation of the image display section, enables high-luminance, high-contrast image displaying, has excellent heat resistance, and also has a low dielectric constant. This polymerizable composition comprises: (1) a urethane (meth)acrylate obtained by reacting a hydrogenated polyolefin polyol and a compound having an isocyanato group and a (meth)acryloyl group; (2) a (meth)acryloyl-group-containing compound having a hydrocarbon group with a carbon number of 6 or greater; and (3) a photopolymerization initiator.

摘要： A first electro-optic display comprises first and second substrates, and an adhesive layer and a layer of electro-optic material disposed between the first and second substrates, the adhesive layer comprising a mixture of a polymeric adhesive material and a hydroxyl containing polymer having a number average molecular weight not greater than about 5000. A second electro-optic display is similar to the first but has an adhesive layer comprising a thermally-activated cross-linking agent to reduce void growth when the display is subjected to temperature changes. A third electro-optic display, intended for writing with a stylus or similar instrument, is produced by forming a layer of an electro-optic material on an electrode; depositing a substantially solvent-free polymerizable liquid material over the electro-optic material; and polymerizing the polymerizable liquid material.

摘要： The invention provides materials and methods for making anisotropic solids which may be in the form of films, layers, shaped elements, and other shaped articles. The methods provide anisotropic solids without the need for rolling, rubbing, or stretching to impart orientational alignment of the molecules of the solid. The methods employ organic or organometallic compounds which are soluble orienting molecules. The solvent or solvent system must be sufficiently volatile to be removed without disruption of the molecular orientation. The soluble orienting molecules include those containing one or more hydrophilic and/or ionic groups and the solvent or solvent system can be a polar organic solvent or solvent system or an aqueous solvent or solvent system. The invention also provides novel compounds having quaterrylene, perylene and naphthalene ring systems carrying one or more hydrophilic and/or ionic groups. These novel compounds can exhibit useful absorption and fluorescence properties in solution and in the solid phase and can exhibit useful liquid crystalline properties.
