    • In a single-antenna time division control type FM-CW radar, an amplifier is provided in each signal path in a transmitting system and a receiving system, and the amplifier provided in the transmitting system and the amplifier provided in the receiving system are operated alternately in synchronism with transmit and receive timings, to perform switching between transmission and reception. The operation of the amplifiers is controlled by controlling the gain of each of the amplifiers. This configuration provides enhanced isolation between the transmitting and receiving systems, and prevents transmitting power from leaking into the receiving system through a transmit-receive switching section.

    • A switching interface for routing RF signals. The interface comprises a buffer decoder which receives first, second and third control signals and then decodes the signals to selectively turn on five RF switches. The decoded output signals from the buffer decoder are supplied to five pair of switch drivers for the RF switches. When a logic one is provided to a switch driver, the switch driver sets the RF switch to an ON position. When a logic zero to a switch driver, the switch driver set the RF switch to an OFF position. A window comparator monitors the outputs of the switch drivers for each of the five RF switches. Whenever one of the two output signals from the switch drivers is within a preset voltage range the window comparator provides a logic one and a logic zero which are supplied to a bit decode circuit. The bit decode circuit then decodes the signals from each of the five window comparators, providing a three bit status signal which indicates that the switch drivers for each RF switch are operating normally. When, however, both output signals from any one of the five window comparators have the same state logic state, the bit decode circuit will provide at its output a three bit logic one error signal which indicates that one of the switch drivers is operating in an open circuit condition or a short circuit condition.

    • In a radar of FM-CW system having a transmitting and a receiving unit 20 and 28 both connected to a transmitting/receiving antenna 26 via a circulator 24, a high frequency switch 22 for transmission, is inserted and turns on and off the path between the transmitting unit 20 and the circulator 24, and in the receiving operation of the receiving unit 28 the high frequency switch 22 for transmission is controlled according to a switch control signal 320a provided from a signal processing unit 30 such as to be held "off" to hold the transmission output of the transmitting unit 20 "off" for a predetermined time, thus reducing sneak noise component between the transmission and reception. Thus it makes possible to reduce sneak noise between the transmission and reception, and readily realize cost reduction without need of separate antennas for the transmission and reception.

    • A transmit/receive (T/R) module of an electrically steered phased array antenna having a receiver comprising a T/R switch, an impedance matching and bias feed network, and a low noise amplifier. The T/R switch comprises a .pi. network to provide a matched termination for protecting the receiver in the transmit mode. This .pi. network emulates a one-eighth wavelength transmission line by providing a 45 degree phase delay, but it exhibits the isolation and bandwidth characteristics of a one-quarter wavelength line. The T/R switch effectively isolates the low noise amplifier from an antenna during transmit mode and uses less than half the area on a substrate typically required for a conventional one-quarter wavelength transmission line. In a receive mode the T/R switch has minimal effect on an RF input signal passing through it.

    • The invention is directed to a directional coupler for coupling together a radar frequency transmitter to a combined transmitting and receiving antenna, a power absorber and a receiver. A tunable stub is employed to reflect a selected amount of transmitted energy to the local oscillator (LO) of the receiver for mixing with the incoming received signal. The coupler can be constructed from any known type RF transmission line suitable for passing or coupling signals of radar frequencies. A significant amount of the transmitter power is absorbed in a power absorbing RF load allowing only a small amount to be transmitted from the antenna and a still smaller amount fed back as LO to the receiver. The invention works equally as well on a disk type antenna and a phased array antenna.
