摘要： The disclosed web splicing apparatus and method provide for the in-registry lap splicing of a new web, that has a spaced, regularly repeating pattern thereon to an expiring web that has an identical, spaced, regularly repeating pattern thereon and that is moving under tension and at a relatively high speed along a predetermined path of travel. The leading end =of the new web is prepared for a splice so that a pattern thereon is aligned with a first pre-selected point. During a splice, a portion of the expiring web is substantially stopped and then moved at a relatively slow speed past a sensor that is positioned at a second pre-selected point downstream from the first pre-selected point and that senses the passage of the next pattern on the slowly moving expiring web. Upon the sensing of the passage of the next pattern, the leading end of the new web is secured to a part of the portion of the expiring web upstream from the second pre-selected point, and the portion of the expiring web is cut upstream from the secured part of the expiring web. Thereafter the joined webs are permitted to run along the path of travel at the relatively high speed.

摘要： A system for processing fabrics or webs continuously, especially for applying and drying resins or other chemicals on glass fiber cloth. The system includes an upstream-located unwinding unit which comprises a semiautomatic splicing assembly for splicing the terminating or trailing end of a fabric or web coming from an unwound roll to the forward or leading end of a fabric or web on a roll to be unwound. The unwinding unit is followed by a first multiple turn-around and take-up roller set when the fabric or web is transferred to a station of application of a resin or other processing material. From the application station the fabric is fed to a hot air drying kiln, where the resin is dried. Downstream of the processing kiln, there are provided a hot finishing roll assembly followed by a second multiple turn-around and take-up roller set. Finally for the processed fabric or web is wound into a roll by a winding unit.

The splicing device is intended to perform on command the splice between a first splicing region, formed on a first backing ribbon, and a second splicing region, formed on a second backing ribbon. The first backing ribbon supports a plurality of adhesive labels which are arranged, mutually spaced, on the face directed toward the second splicing region. The first backing ribbon has at least one portion that is free from self-adhesive labels and forms the first splicing region; the portion is located substantially at the end of the first backing ribbon.

摘要： The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for splicing a web of layered material so that a new roll of material may be joined to an expiring web via a butt joint. A shear wheel is driven to ensure that the shear wheel positively rotates as it cuts across web material that is held against the side of an anvil. In the illustrated embodiment, a drive cable and shear wheel assembly are operably connected to a splicing apparatus, a portion of the drive cable being threaded through the splicing apparatus and wrapped around at least a portion of the shear wheel, the threaded drive cable being maintained under tension. The rapid movement of the shear wheel assembly, and the wrapping engagement between the taut threaded drive cable and shear wheel, forces the shear wheel to positively spin, thereby improving the cutting capabilities of the attached rotary cutter.

The apparatus includes a clamp for engaging and stopping the advancing web, and a web severing mechanism to transversely move across and sever the stopped web. A new web holding assembly supports the leading end portion of the new web, and the holding assembly may be lowered to align the trailing and leading ends so that they may be joined by a tape or the like. The web severing mechanism includes a clamping wheel positioned to smooth the trailing end portion of the stopped web before it is severed by a following cutting wheel. Also, a hand-held tool is provided for accurately and safely positioning the leading end portion of the new web on the new web holding assembly.
