    • Apparatus for applying pressure sensitive labels to products on a product line peels the labels from a web of release paper and applies them to the products, when the latter are detected to be in a predetermined position, by action of a pneumatic applicator head. The head favorably includes an exhaust blower which vents to the atmosphere thereby keeping slitting dust out of the machinery cabinet, and is arranged to rock to an open, service position to expose compressed air hoses therewithin. These hoses are coupled to apertures in a base plate of the applicator head by venturi nozzles which serve to increase the pressure of compressed air pulses carried by the hoses for applying the labels to products. The web can be advanced over a peeling arrangement by a drive system including a drive roller powered by a two stage chain drive, with a clutch disposed between the two stages and a brake disposed directly with the drive roller. A preferred control circuit includes first to fourth timer circuits and an inhibiting circuit arrangement to ensure that multiple detections of a product during a label application cycle will not cause misoperation of the apparatus. An optional printer can be included to print additional information on the labels.

    • A defect on a moving web such as a printed sheet of paper is detected visually or automatically, and the type of defect thus detected is marked by means of a stamping unit on a label of a label tape consisting of a base strip and a number of labels removably secured to the base strip. Thereafter, the base strip of the label tape is advanced and reversed abruptly in its moving direction, whereby the label is partially separated from the base strip. The label thus partially separated is then pressed against the moving web by means of a pressure roller. At the instant of pressing of the label against the web, abrupt variation in tension of the label tape occurs, which variation or shock is absorbed by movement of a swing roller on a swing arm in the direction of movement of the web. The label tape is passed around the swing roller and then directed downwardly. The swing arm is supported by means of a spring, and when the swing roller is moved, the spring is extended. The absorption of the shock prevents any adverse effects such as tearing and wrinkling of the label being affixed.

    • Packaging method and apparatus for depositing a predetermined number of sheets, such as bookplates, in a rectangular box bottom having a bottom wall and four upstanding side walls, placing a box top of the same shape but slightly larger size over the box bottom and applying a label to the box top. The box bottoms are conveyed past a loading station at which a predetermined number of bookplates are "extruded" through a slot in a front wall of a hopper, with the height of the slot being adjusted as desired to allow just the desired number of bookplates to be pushed or extruded through it to a box bottom positioned opposite the loading station. As the loaded box bottoms move past the loading station they are intersected by the box tops which move at right angles to the box bottoms and, just before each box top meets a box bottom, the box top leading edge is lifted by means of a suction so that it clears the side wall of the box bottom. The box top is then pushed across the box bottom by a pusher plate until the leading edge of the box tops meets a corresponding side wall of the box bottom, at which point a hinged member urges the box top over the box bottom. As the combined box bottoms and tops with the bookplates contained in them move forward, individual labels depicting the type of bookplates packaged in the boxes are adhesively applied to each box top using air pressure to lift an individual label from a stack of labels and then apply the label to a box top.
