    • A dual vehicular steering system with a primary system for normal operation and a secondary system for emergency operation triggered by pressure sensitive switching and valving means. Both systems have in common a pair of single rod hydraulic steering cylinders with each cylinder being connected to a steerable wheel of the vehicle, a vehicular engine and hydraulic fluid stored in a tank. Cylinder shuttle valves connected to each steering cylinder function as gate devices to separate the primary steering system from the secondary system. The primary system includes a main pump driven by the engine, a high pressure filter, a priority flow divider to divert fluid in excess of an acceptable flow level, a control valve, an integrated valve package to proportionately regulate fluid flow between the cylinders, and means to direct fluid from the tank to the pump, through the filter, through the priority flow divider, through the control valve, through the integrated valve package and to the steering cylinders. The secondary system includes a secondary pump, an electric motor driven by the battery to drive the secondary pump, and means to conduct fluid from the secondary pump, through the switching and valving means and to the steering cylinders. The secondary system also includes an accumulator, pressure sensitive switching and valving means to conduct fluid from the secondary pump to the accumulator, and means to conduct fluid from the accumulator to the steering cylinders. Steering in the secondary system is accomplished by applying equal pressure to both ends of each steering cylinder thereby locking the cylinders in a single mode and by selectively draining fluid from selected ends of the steering cylinders. Operator controlled secondary steering switch and valve means operate the selective drain means.

    • A vehicle power steering system which effects steering with a pair of fluid actuated cylinders, one cylinder being operatively connected to each steerable wheel. Each cylinder is normally powered independently of the other cylinder so that both cylinders steer the vehicle. A pressurized fluid flow from a single source is divided for parallel flow along companion fluid flow paths to the indivdual cylinders. In response to a pre-determined pressure decrease sensed in one of those fluid flow paths a pressure responsive fluid diverter automatically diverts fluid flow from the reduced pressure flow path to the companion path so that all pressurized fluid in the system is then utilized to power one of the cylinders.

    • The invention relates to a hydraulic control unit for a servomotor of the type used for vehicle steering systems. The unit has a control circuit with a power operated pump and a hand operated metering motor and an operating circuit with a power operated pump. The two circuits intersect upstream from the servomotor. A pressure comparison, throttling and proportioning valve is disposed between the outlets of the two pumps of the control and operating circuits. The proportioning valve is controlled by a differential pressure applied by the pumps and a spring which supplements the operating pump pressure. In the normal operating mode the proportioning valve allows a minor fractional flow of the pressurized fluid generated by the control pump to flow through the valve to the operating circuit. Under varying conditions when either of the pumps become wholly or partially inoperative the proportioning valve provides for an increased flow from the unaffected circuit to the disabled circuit to maintain a degree of operation until such time that the breakdown has been cured.

    • Disclosed is a vehicle power steering system including an electro-hydraulic safety backup system for supplying pressurized fluid to the steering motor of the vehicle when the pressure between the main pump and the power steering system drops below a predetermined pressure level. The safety backup system includes an electrical circuit which is added on to the ignition and starting circuits of a vehicle such that the backup system will not operate in response to intermittent short duration pressure drops. The electrical circuit includes an arming feature to prevent the backup system from operating during initial start-up of the vehicle and further provides for operation of the vehicle's starting motor to have priority over the backup system operation.
