    • An apparatus and method are provided for cutting a sheet of material into a plurality of segments having curved edges. A sheet of material is placed on a frame having a horizontal support member. A clamping device secures the sheet and a first mechanism moves the clamping device and sheet in an axial direction. A cutting head assembly is provided with a passively rotatable knife adapted to cut the sheet as the sheet moves in an axial direction past the knife. The cutting head assembly is rotatable about a vertical axis and movable in a lateral direction perpendicular to the axial motion of the sheet. A second mechanism moves the cutting head assembly in said lateral direction, and a third mechanism rotates the cutting head assembly. To produce a continuous cutting line, a controller sends a signal to the first, second, and third moving mechanisms which simultaneously moves the corresponding components at a desired rate and distance.

    • A method and apparatus for cutting predetermined lengths of panels from a continuous strip of flexible material and for forming the lengths of panel members to have a preselected panel profile. The strip is reel fed to a first strip driving station which drives the strip through a shearing station, over a hump table, to a second strip driving station and through a strip forming station. In sequence, the second strip driving station brakes the leading portion of the strip to effect a strip hump over the hump table, which is detected by a protoelectric sensor for hump height and signals the first strip driving station to vary its feed rate to maintain the hump; the second driving station is then signaled to commence driving the lead portion of the strip to the strip forming station. When a predetermined panel length is detected by the first strip driving station, it slows and stops the strip and signals the shearing station to cut the strip, whereupon, during this strip feed pause, the hump dissipates as it continues to feed the terminal portion of the panel length to the strip forming station.

    • A rotating shear for cutting a rapidly moving wire has a pair of cutter heads rotatable about parallel axes and having respective blades. A drive synchronously counterrotates the heads about the respective axes with close juxtaposition of the blades on each revolution. Thus when the wire is between the heads level with the blades it is severed thereby. A guide tube surrounds the wire upstream of the heads and has a downstream end movable generally parallel to the axes and positioned adjacent and between the cutter heads. The wire exits from the guide tube in a direction generally perpendicular to the plane of the head axes. A guide head fixed to one of the cutter heads is formed with a generally helical guide groove centered on the respective axis. An axially and radially displaceable but angularly generally nondisplaceable follower can move between a position engaged in the groove and axially entrainable thereby and a position clear thereof. An actuator displaces the follower between the positions. A rigid link is connected between the follower and the guide tube so that when the follower is in the groove the tube can be pulled axially into and out of alignment with the blades for cropping of the wire and when out of the groove the tube can be moved independently of the head.
