摘要： A low pressure drop, highly efficient structured packing comprises sheet material formed into vertical preferably square channels containing vortex generators formed from the sheet material. The channels, while vertically linear, are periodically interrupted by the vortex generators providing tortuous fluid paths along the channels. The thus formed vortex generators form openings between adjacent channels providing fluid communication between and uniform flow within the different channels. The packing can be utilized in fluid mixing or those operations that require multiphase mass transfer, such as absorption or distillation. The addition of a catalyst makes the structure suitable for catalytic distillation. Turbulence is provided the fluids by the tortuous vertical path with low pressure drops transversely and vertically, with optimum liquid holdup.

Each packing element is oriented with the sheets thereof in a plane which is angularly displaced with respect to the sheets of neighboring elements. A mechanism is provided at or in the vicinity of the interface between neighboring elements for reducing the pressure drop imposed on the continuous phase as it passes from one element to the next.

The flow ducts have at least two reorientations or redirections in flow direction. The directly adjoining segments of two foils following each other in the layering are connected with each other exclusively zone-wise, and along the other portion of the length they leave a slit open which connects the side-by-side flow ducts. A cross-sectional surface of the slits amount only to a fraction of the cross-sectional surfaces of the flow ducts connected by the slits.

摘要： The catalytic reactor has a catalyst member in the form of a stage of different orientations from one another and with flow-guiding elements which form crossing subflow ducts and which have a catalyst thereon. The flow-guiding elements are at an angle of inclination W of at least 10.degree. to the main flow direction and form partly open flow-crossing places between the subflows. The height H of a stage corresponds to a displacement factor H/HO of at least 1/2 where HO=Dctg W and D equals the diameter (or width) of the catalyst member. Satisfactory homogenization of the catalytic reaction and satisfactory heat removal via the heat-conductive rector wall are therefor achieved. The selectivity of the chemical reaction is improved and slip substantially obviated.
