    • A reproducing system for use as a high speed magnetic tape scanning instrument to provide for the superimposing of recurring signals such as ECG complexes on a visual indicator such as an oscilloscope from signals previously recorded for long time periods by a very slow single-track magnetic tape recorder. Trigger signals are developed from the reproduction by a first playback head of the ECG signals recorded on the tape. The trigger signals are delayed a particular period to provide for control signals to control the activation of the oscilloscope sweep at the proper times to produce a stable superimposition of the ECG signals as reproduced by a second playback head spaced from the first playback head. The particular period of delay is provided electronically or electromechanically.

    • A method and apparatus for an ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring system for recording, detection, measurement, analysis and plotting of high resolution electrocardiographic data having a modified Holter recorder that performs digital signal averaging of selected signals as well as storing for future playback all ECG beats. The digitally signal averaged beats are correlated with a previously defined correlation coefficient yielding summated results that have eliminated nonrepetitive noise to less than a microvolt. By real time averaging approximately 1000 beats during a 10 to 15 minute period and digitally storing the averaged data, micropotential averaging can be performed several times per hour for up to 24-hours. Analog recordings are precalibrated for accurate amplitude representation as well as providing an option for standard one millivolt calibration pulses at the beginning of the tape. Digital recordings are precalibrated relative to the acceptable levels without the use of a calibration signal. The recordings are downloaded to analysis systems at high speeds. If the recordings are analog they are digitized at a sufficiently high enough resolution to permit analysis of micropotentials. All recorded data is transferred to computer memory and hard disk for further review by the analysis system.

    • An indicating device is used to record the waveshape of the patient current of a defibrillator as a composite with an ECG recording such that the current waveshape is shown clearly and can be evaluated. A coupling device is provided for deriving an electrical signal corresponding to the defibrillator current. The electrical signal is written at a high frequency into a memory for storage. A time extension of the stored signal is achieved subsequently by reading the stored signal from the memory with a low reading frequency. The ratio of the high and low frequencies is 100 to 1. The time extended signal is selectively applied for recording. During the duration of the recording of the defibrillator current waveshape, a switch control circuit interrupts the recording of the electrocardiogram (ECG) and substitutes the extended signal. A timing and delay circuit is used to synchronize the memory operation and the ECG interruption with the defibrillator operation.

    • A system which is capable of allowing an attending physician to continuously monitor the electrocardiogram (ECG) signals produced by a cardiac patient. The signals, generated by the patient, are first recorded in real time over a predetermined time period established by the physician. At the conclusion of the predetermined time period a monitoring station is automatically alerted by telephone and commences receiving the patient's real time ECG signals directly. The recorded ECG signals are then transmitted in a compressed time fashion to the monitoring station simultaneously with the real time ECG signals. The monitoring station receives the compressed time and the real time transmitted signals and following analysis thereof transmits a report of selected portions of the ECG to the physician. Upon instructions from the physician, the monitoring station either returns the recording apparatus to its normal operational status for a predetermined time period, or continues to receive and analyze the real time ECG signal until the patient's signal is sufficiently stable and then returns the recording apparatus to its normal operational status. This process repeats continuously. The physician communicates directly with the monitoring station and with the patient as may be required. The system and method provides close and complete monitoring of the patient with complete ECG data retrieval and individualized close patient surveillance.

    • Apparatus under control of an operator for selectively displaying signals stored on a magnetic tape. The tape is normally first played back at a high speed, with the reproduced signal displayed at high speed to permit the operator to determine which parts of the tape to view at real-time speed. In the real-time viewing mode, a segment of the tape is played again at high speed to provide a better quality signal; the signal from the segment is converted to digital form and stored in a memory for use in creating a real-time display. The operator then can view the display of the stored signal in a variety of ways: stationary, advancing at real-time speed, or in reverse at real-time speed. The length of the segment stored is relatively short to minimize the size of the memory. After a segment is played back, the tape is brought to a stop and then moved in the opposite direction to position it for playing back the next segment.

    • A method of obtaining a continuous sequence of horizontal vectorcardiograms from an ambulatory patient throughout a 24-hour period. A simplified five-electrode ECG lead system is affixed to the patient and the ECG signals are recorded on a portable magnetic tape recorder attached to the patient. Thereafter, the tape is removed from the recorder and taken to a processing station for playback, display, and analysis. The tape is played back at high speed to permit rapid scanning of the tape for anomalies in the vectorcardiograph. Anomalies can then be studied in detail by playing back the tape at a reduced speed. The vectorcardiographs exhibit high correlation with those obtained by use of the more common, but more complex, Frank lead system.

    • There is disclosed a system for reviewing ECG signals at high speed. Successive ECG waveforms are superimposed on each other in a display, but the rate at which traces of the waveforms are formed is independent of the rate at which ECG waveforms are played back from a tape on which they are recorded. This is achieved by storing data representative of each ECG waveform in a recirculating memory whose recirculation rate is faster than the input data rate, and using the recirculated data to form the display. A similar recirculating memory is provided to form a display of each 4-second ECG signal segment which contains a premature beat, this display being formed automatically without requiring operator control.
